I have been running Nitto Extreme Drag radials on the race car for the last 4 years and they have performed well. I am running 275/50-15's and they are now in need of replacing. For years Mickey Thompson's ET streets were the ticket and I thought I would go with them since I wanted to step up to a little larger tire. They made a 295/55 tire that I planned to get. But then I saw that in the past couple years they have changed the tread pattern to the ET Street S/S. For what ever reason it just doesn't look as good to me with an additional thread groove down the middle. It looks like they would give up some traction. But does anyone know if they are still the way to go. The other option I was looking at was the Hoosier DOT Drag Radial which looks much better but I know nothing about them. I want to stay with the DOT tires and not a pure slick. If you have any info I'd appreciate it!

Rick

That was pretty funny! :D Maybe he just had toooooo much traction.

Suck it up and put a real slick on it tough guy.

I ran ET Streets on the red car all the way to 12.0's. Mine were 8.5X26. The newer ones with a groove in them will probably work just as well. You ain't making that much powah yet.

I run DOT's so I can go to the Street night races if I want to, without changing tires. I'm Lazy!

Rick,

Are you saying you are losing traction with the old Nittos? That is a fairly big tire already for the HP you are making. What pressure do you run?

Nice youtube, Dan. Priceles...

The Hoosier DOT radials look good to me, and I will likely try those next. I have 235/60-15 Goodyear drag radials on the turbo car (2011 vintage) and those still hook well on the track, but not so great on the street (at 15 psi boost and 18 psi in the tires). I will be minitubbing that car this winter and getting some 275 or wider tires.

Smoke 'em if ya got 'em...

Lou

Running @ 20# most of the time. 18# was lowest I think.

Nittos are about worn out, and I will need some new tires soon. They may have a little more life in them, but not a whole lot.

As for traction, I have lost a slight amount of traction several times. Each time I felt that I had slipped a little my 60' times backed me up. At Wilkesboro this year I made a bunch of runs and on at least 2 of them my 60' times dropped from a 1.80-1.82 to a 1.85-1.86. I know that is not much but it told me my "feeling" was correct.

I do know, if I don't heat them well, they do not bite. I always thought drag radials were not supposed to be heated quite as much as a slick. Maybe I need could go a little lower on tire pressure? What is the bottom on tire pressure?

One other thing that I am pondering is that the 1st Big bore motor I built had a better 60' time than my current motor with bigger cam, more compression and Jeffrey head? Not sure why. I'd have to look but I think it was around 1.78 60'. This motor has run .4 faster and a couple MPH faster but not 60's
Car has same suspension, transmission and Rear end (4.56) and Carburetion. I am not worried about this just wondering.

Probably will go with the Mickey's! And the bigger tires cost about the same and shouldn't hurt traction.

Thanks,
Rick

?? 16#, 14# I am sure you reach a point of diminishing return.

DOT tires usually want more air, not less.

On your missing 60', did you change your converter or are you still using the same one?

Same convertor

I did look back at my times with the other motor and I only have written down a 1.86 60' time with the 3.91's. I don't have 60' with the 4.56's in the car written down.

Went back and found this from 2013
Quote:
Also kind of hard to tell if the 4.56's helped or not. I did pick up 2 MPH in the 1/8, but the 60's were not any better. The ET was close to the same as with the 3.91's at Mason Dixon
So I guess my 1.81 60' are better and my memory just stinks!! Guess that falls into the category of I know I was faster than I really was! :D :D Old age is great.
