Ok so I've been messing with this carb and points on the car trying to get it to run. Cleaned and rebuilt the carb but the carb still will not idle there is a video I'll link at the end so you can hear it running it seems to have went from running rich to lean and I have not pulled the plugs but will pull them tomorrow to get pics. I'm considering this being a California car it may need rejetted but I havent spoke with anyone really knowledgeable on this carb I don't think it's far off will run at 2000 rpm or so and will run on choke no problem I appreciate any help getting a little discouraged with this simple little carb https://youtu.be/ZQxzg6ZH46Q |

Don't go changing stuff (rejetting) until you're done fixing stuff. It will only move you further away from where you want to be. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. Also see here. As for the rest of the engine: tune-up parts and technique suggestions will be found in this thread. Keep in mind faulty valve adjustment can make problems with idling, too. Two other things: 1. What year is this car? Is it a '72? 2. The problem very well may not be anything you did or didn't do; that carburetor has already been "remanufactured" at least once, a process that gives any carburetor a giant shove toward permanent uselessness. |

Correct it is a 72 Plymouth valiant. It has not been plated since 06 so I assume it was taken off the road around then. Car came with new plugs. mice chewed the wires in half so I put a new set of wires on it. No spark when I started so I checked everything over ended up being bad points so I threw a set in. And adjusted them to .020 so my dwell was in spec. It's alot better then it was now it at least runs but just can't figure out this idle issue have watched several videos on these by Mike's carbs(where I ordered the rebuild kit) The problem is I have a budget on getting the slant running it's very hard to walk away from it now that I know it runs. I will check out those links I appreciate the help |

While you next have the carburetor off, look down at the floor of the intake manifold and you'll find a weird little jet screwed in there. That was the primitive and nasty EGR system California cars got. No valve, just full-time exhaust into the intake tract. Let the jet corrode bigger, and yeah, the car will never idle. Remove the jet and replace it with a blankoff plug. |
