Hey all, my 62 Lancer 4 speed 170 is running and driving. Thanks for all the support! I'm still running the original 170 with 3.73 gears. What would be considered the top safe RPM for sustained driving? My calculations show 3374 at 70. I'll confirm with my GPS. Cheer, Barnaby |

3400 should be just fine. I did thousands of miles like that in my 64 Dart 225 in the days before the 5spd. Note that you could probably cruise a 170 a lot higher, as far as rod/piston stresses go, but I wonder about crank and rod bearings? Personally, I take my time to break in engines before I beat on them. If it were mine, I'd keep it under 3000 for 500-1000 miles to let everything settle and wear in. For a racecar, obviously this is not practical, but it is what I like to do with my motors if at all possible. Lou |

Thanks Lou! I'm actually still on the original motor, it shows a bit of cylinder wall wear. It doesn't smoke or burn oil. I should do a compression test. Is the RPM riskier with an old motor? B |

I would say an old motor would be just fine, as long as oil pressure is good. What is oil P at idle (please give RPM) and at 3000 RPM? Lou |

Hey Lou, I haven't had a chance to get accurate numbers between work and weather. Hopefully I'll get the car out by the end of the week. I will also check rpm's against GPS speed for accuracy. It will be interesting to see how accurate the online rpm calculator is. Thanks, Barnaby |

I assume you have a tachometer in the car? Lou |

Morning Lou, At warm idle I have 38 psi oil pressure. And I do have a tach. Thanks, Barnaby |

Sounds like a healthy motor. Run it. Lou |
