Searched the Forum, ordered Mahle VS39745 valve cover gaskets, which seemed to be the correct (best) cork-rubber material, better than Fel-Pro's cork ones that harden and leak. No joy: I received Mahle / Victor Reinz p/n VS39745 CORK gaskets, which the packaging said supercedes also the VS39745R (rubber) and also the VS12680R (rubber) for the older slants. It appears to me that the "R" rubber gaskets are no longer available. Does anyone have any ideas for a gasket that leaks less than the cork Fel-Pro's & Victor's, not silicone?

Fel Pro still makes the rubber valve cover gasket.. but would venture a guess that they come from one manufacturer
to put in each kit, so if Mahle has stopping using them, then Fel-pro will soon follow...

Since I use these a lot I opted to buy 10 from Rock Auto and keep them in stock as a just in case.

Thanks, I haven't tried Pep Boys, as they have no stores in my neighborhood. On your advice, I went ahead and ordered the R gaskets on line (Amazon) from them, and will wait to see what I get back. P

I didn't think the vs12680r was available anymore through the mainstream channels. Years back rock auto had a closeout on them and were practically giving them away for a couple dollars each. Like DI I bought 10. They ended up sending the cork ones. When I alerted them to that they sent the proper rubber ones so now I have 20 gaskets sitting on the shelf :)

I ordered the vs12680r on Amazon. Shortly after ordering, I remembered that this is for the pre 1981 valve covers. I have a '82 D150. I attempted to cancel the order on Amazon, but it's from a third party vendor and Amazon notified me that the vendor's email for such communications was not working. They'll only get an Amazon account message. Anyhow, if I do wind up getting it, I'll offer it up here.

I took a look at Rock Auto's wholesaler closeouts for my application. They listed a Mahle VS39720 for post '80 that their copy claimed to be cork-rubber. Maybe they really will be that. I ordered a couple for $2.75 a piece.

I was at NAPA over the weekend looking for the 12680R (rubber) and they only had one in stock nationwide. I bought the cork one instead.

Received the new FelPro 12680R rubber gaskets, as ordered through Pep Boys, but actually sent from a different supplier. I guess there are some rubber ones out there, though maybe old stock?

Rubber valve cover gasket for '81-up Slant-6: Fel-Pro VS50185R. Check sources like Olson's Gaskets, Gerald Lettieri, and Old Car Parts Northwest for gaskets that are drying up through regular sources.
