I have a 1967 Clark Cortez motor home with a 225 /6. When I drive the rig it does great up to and including freeway speeds (despite weighing in at 9000#), until I start heading up an incline at speed. The engine starts a noticeable chuffing noise. It is not lugging down, nor do I think I am overloading it. The noise does not sound like it is ignition related. Compression was good. My valves are adjusted to 11 and 21 (halfway between truck and car spec) while hot and running. I have a two barrel carter BBD and what I would call a stock exhaust system. Manifolds were removed and resealed when i pulled the engine and did all of the covers (clean, paint and reseal) It'll also do the same thing underload climbing hills in town as well. Any thoughts on things I should check? Anyone have this happen to them? Tor |

Not sure what "chuffing" is... Does it feel like the engine is loosing power when the noise starts? DD |

Welcome here. Can you please be as descriptive as possible about this chuffing effect? Five-senses stuff: exactly what does it sound like, what does it feel like (jerking/shuddering/something else), what does it look like (any smoke out the tailpipe along with?), etc. What is it about the sound that makes you think it is not ignition-related, and what exactly is your ignition setup? |

Sounds like it may be exhaust related, and if so, it's dangerous to drive it until you find the cause. Carbon monoxide is a real killer. |

Got her fixed. Just a few blocks from my home I noticed a neighbor had a significant collection of Mopar vehicles. I stopped one day and introduced myself and mentioned that I noticed his Chrysler problem. he pointed me in the direction of a manifold gasket leak and that turned out to be exactly the problem. Even though I could not feel it with my hand when the engine was cold, I taped a shopvac to the exhaust pipe and pressurized the system with the engine off. Spritzing soapy water made it abundantly clear that I had a seriously leaky gasket. Installed a Remflex brand manifold gasket and sealed it up tight. Nice and quite!! It is really nice to find experienced folks both on this forum and in the 'real world'... Thank you! Tor |
