When using a hydraulic head (81-82) with an adjustable rocker setup (solid tappets/rockers/shaft from my '68)- is the stepped rear bold necessary - or will the standard bolt from the '68 work?

If the stepped bolt is necessary - I'll be looking for one :) The '68 head is coming off this weekend, just trying to button everything up.

I also posted in Parts Wanted that I am in need of a valve cover for the notched hydra head.

Is there anything else un-standard about this swap to be aware of? The hydraulic head is a temporary solution while my original is having some work done - although temporary could be a while... As I'm sure we can all relate to.

Yes, stepped bolt is needed on the later heads, this change occurred about 1977-ish... you can use your old rocker shaft with the stepped bolt with no
issues.

Nothing out of the ordinary on the swap, although the late heads are more consistent in chamber sizes than the
60's heads so you may get a compression bump if your '68 has a chamber of 57-60cc and the hydro head has only
54 cc... and the head gaskets are the same...

Hey Rob - thanks a ton here, much appreciate the insight. Seems easy enough...

Hope all is well,

That's probably one of the nice things about the late heads and rocker shafts, you can't flip the shaft and get the holes in the wrong spot
since the lower hole bolt hole in the stepped shaft application is smaller than the top hole at the bolt head...
