Post subject:  Cracked 904 Valve Body

I started having trouble with my 904 shifting after having been fine for years. I checked the common problems of kickdown and fluid levels and finally dropped the pan. I have discovered that the valve body has an approximately 2 inch crack running along the top, near where the part number and mold marks are molded in. The chamber that is affected is in the Front Pump pressure circuit, with a branch to the Governor Pressure valve.

My question is; is there any way to repair a crack in the valve body, or is it toast?

The rest of the components of this valve body are in decent shape, with all of the passages are relatively clean. It really looks like a good transmission until you get to this crack.

I can't say I have ever heard of a cracked valve body, in any transmission. If it were me, I would replace the entire valve body. With all the pressure and hot fluid to deal with, I don't see how it could effectively be repaired.
What year is the trans? Is it a factory valve body (non-race)?

As far as I can determine, it is a factory valve body with no mods.

It is a 1965 904. I have read about cracked valve bodies before, but this is my first experience with one first hand.

Well, if you need a factory replacement, I still have the 904 from my 65 Belvedere (slant application). It ran perfectly fine, only 60,000 miles on the trans (the original trans, too).

Replacement is the way to go...
I also have some 65 904 valve bodies if you need one.

Does anyone have ideas on how this might have happened? If there is something wrong with my setup that might have caused this, I would like to avoid it a second time. There is nothing exotic about my setup. Stock radiator and lines, stock cables and kickdown link.

I still need that 904 valve body. Doctor Dodge, please check your PMs. :)

UPDATE: I now have a donor valve body and am in the process of cleaning and inspecting.

Think happy thoughts. I will let you know how it goes!

I spent much of the weekend installing and testing the valve body that Badvert65 provided. Thanks, Matt, for that much needed component.

Cleaning took some time, but the unit cleaned up well. I replaced one rusted ball inside the body, and the spring and indent ball for the rooster comb on the outside. Replacement of the latter was probably optional, but since there was some rust on both the spring and the ball and I had another set handy, it got swapped out.

The bottom line is that this transmission is shifting fairly well now. It does have some trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd from time to time, but it is much better than it was.

That is the good news. The bad news is, when I was installing the valve body, I must have displaced the kick down shaft seal and it has now been lost. This was immediately evident by the massive amount of leaking transmission fluid following the test drive.

So now the hunt is on to find a replacement for that. I found one person selling them on eBay, for $20 a piece! OUCH! That is crazy money for a small rubber seal that looks like it should cost about 60 cents.

Does anybody know where I might find one that is priced a little more realistically?

As always, thanks for everything. And a special thanks to Badvert65 for coming up with a valve body in a pinch!

2466548 looks like the correct seal. There isn't much to it. Mine mounts directly into the transmission housing. I think 66 and up with linkage shift, this same seal installs in the top of the shift linkage tower. I have a MoPar part number now so, hopefully it gets easier from here!
