Post subject:  Adjusting bands
Gonna try to take care of the bands (which weren't done when the fluid was changed) on the 904 tomorrow, but I wanted to doublecheck on the settings here to make sure they're right.

The directions I have say "Loosen locknut and back off approximately 5 turns. Test the adjusting screw for free turning in the lever. With an inch pound torque wrench, tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch pounds. Then back off 3 1/4 turns. Hold adjusting screw and tighten lock nut to 35 FOOT pounds." for the low/reverse kickdown band, but I can't find anything on adjusting the other band, and of course the manual has gone missing. :oops:

Anyone care to offer some specs and tips on taking care of the bands?

Forgot to add, it's a 904.

Sorry, don't have a manual handy. But its been my experience, if you need to adjust the bands, you really need to rebuild the tranny.

I suspect it does need a rebuild. There's a nasty grinding noise in the driveline at partial throttle above 35 MPH that I can't trace, so I'm going through everything trying to find it. If worse comes to worse, I'll be rebuilding the tranny with a TCI kit.

The kickdown band is the same as the low/reverse band, only back off the adjusting screw 2 turns and tighten the lock nut to 29 ft-lbs.

By turns, is that full revolutions of the adjusting screw? I would assume it is...

The low/reverse band is not the kickdown band. The kickdown band is the second gear band which is the only one that can be adjusted externally. The reverse band is adjusted when the pan is off. The 'two turns back' adjustment will work, but to be precise, you need to know the kickdown lever ratio (5.0, 4.2, 3.8, etc) to know exactly how many turns to back off.

What would the ratio be for a stock BBS carbed engine?

I can't answer that question. But the ratio is stamped on the lever. I don't think it's visible from inside. It is clear once you disassemble the trans. You have to pull the trans to remove the KD lever.

bud L is right, it's stamped on the lever. The most common is the 3.8 which takes 2 turns. After a test drive, the adjustment can be tweeked a little if it has a flare up or if it has a nose over on the 2-3 shift.

Lever---turns out
2.8 2 1/2
3.2 2 1/4
3.8 2
4.2 1 3/4
5.0 1 1/2

My transmision expert that builds my trans says the 3.8 or 4.2 is a better kick down than the 5.0 for a slant just a fyi bit of info Thanks Possum Parker :D :D

Guess I should have been clearer and said the kickdown band adjustment is the same as the low/reverse band adjustment except back out the adjuster screw 2 turns and tighten lock nut to 29 ft-lbs. Sorry for any confusion.
