| Post subject: | 1983 D150 A833-OD Clutch Pedal Adjustment |
I have a 1983 D150 with A833 4 speed and it seems to me like the clutch doesn’t grab until the clutch pedal is almost all the way out and way off the floor. I tried to adjust using the adjustment nuts for the clutch pedal freeplay underneath on the cable but it just seems like the clutch should be grabbing closer to the floor. Is it possible that it may need a new clutch or could something else be wrong? All my experiences driving stick are on newer vehicles but none have grabbed this high off the floor before making it tough to drive without stalling. |

I have an 83 D150, a833 OD tranny,,,and I don’t know of an ‘adjustment’ to the clutch pedal height. The adjustment for the clutch engagement is controlled by the nut on a rod at the throw out bearing lever that protrudes from the bell housing. Try removing the bottom plate from the bell housing and adjusting the nut till you get .030 or so clearance between the clutch plate and the flywheel with the clutch pedal fully depressed. You will need someone under the vehicle and someone working the clutch pedal. Do this with the motor off. Usually when a clutch is worn it will slip, if the clutch is not slipping, it should be ok. Other possible causes to poor clutch pedal action is, the clutch linkage-z bar has excessive play due to wear. There are plastic bushings in the z bar that wear over time and use. Another item that wears is the eyes at the ends of the clutch pedal rod, with wear they open up and can give erratic clutch operation. But start with checking clearance between the clutch disk and flywheel. |

I thought this was the proper set-up.Shouldn't need to be pushing the pedal down to the floor. |

Funny. I'm just the opposite. No experience with modern stuff. I would definitely check the issues mentioned above. Maybe ask around or wait for others to respond. I seem to remember only keeping about an inch or 2 of free play. In the end I suppose it would come down to personal preference. |

It could possibly be completely normal honestly. Just different than anything I’ve experienced I guess. I almost wish I could drive someone else’s to compare it to to.

Z bars can break / crack as well and be twisting instead of pushing the clucth fork. |

My '84 D100 clutch starts to grab a third of the way up from the floor, same as my '83 van. But my '86 W150 grabbed at the last few inches of travel. I have no idea how it's supposed to be from the factory. |

Haha, me neither! Maybe it’s normal and I’m overreacting. Just seems odd to me, but maybe that’s normal of A833’s. I know they’re tough trannies, but I can’t say I’ve ever shifted one before. Ive been driving manual transmission since I learned how to drive almost 20 years ago and when I went to test drive it before I bought it, I stalled out about 4 times before I figured it out. Its a fine line between riding the clutch, the clutch grabbing, and the motor completely stalling. Haha

I have about 6" of total pedal travel. Mine starts to take hold at about 3 1/2 to 4" off the floor. My pedal is about 1/2" higher than the brake pedal when completely out. |

Mines probably close to the same when all said and done. Just seems like there’s no easing into the clutch it’s off or on. Haha. Just different than anything I’ve ever driven I guess. The more people are commenting the more I think it’s normal. I’m going to check the free play as instructed above and once I get it back on the road, I’ll check it out again.
