What is the stock size for pushrod holes /oil return holes on an 81 and newer hydro head?

Thanks,

Greg

A little bigger than a 0.904" lifter, but do not know actual. Probably 1.05" or so. Will try to remember to measure tonight or tomorrow...

Yes, if you have a very steady hand you can pull the lifters out.

I have an 87 head on the work bench,
using a telescoping gauge and a hand caliper I got
.950 for the pushrod holes

Sounds good guys.. thanks, I never had seen inside a Hydro Head and wasn't sure if someone machined out the head for additional pushrod clearance.

Seems like a good way to lighten up the Peanut head however.

Yep.

I dont think there is water out there by the spark plugs and push rods.. never was any there on the open deck 60-75 heads.

I guess you never know.

I do not know. I've never cut one apart.

Well time to stock up on peanut heads and buy a bridgeport.

we all know the ports never changed much,
so it is not likely that the external configuration of the
water jacket changed over the years.

the only obvious water jacket change was the addition of more
deck side water openings. My guess is that by the 80's Chrysler
finally figured out that core sand was cheaper than gray iron.

There's a pic of a cut-open peanut head showing the location of the water jacket on the Engine FAQ page.

Well based on the sawed head that doc had done..

I guess it is possible to hit water.

But I think the idea would work.

Maybe the water jacket wall was moved toward the valves on the hydro head as there is a lot more open deck on the bottom of the head compared to the tube and peanut versions.
