The local machine shop quoted me a price of $450 plus tax to install new hardened valve seats, new valve guides, and give it a 0.05" haircut. I am providing the valves, keepers, and springs, which I already have.

What's everyone else paying? This seems kind of steep to me. Then again, I haven't had anything machined in a while.

Why are you putting in hard seats.
The 83 motor has os engine builder valves.
The original valve openings were re cut.
Have 30,000 miles on that motor, no valve issues
to date.

That is not out of line for that much work. Putting seats in correctly sucks. Also, is he cutting it .005" or .05"?

He's cutting just enough for a head gasket to get a fresh surface.

.005 cut is not enough to make up for the difference in head gasket thickness from OEM shim gasket to aftermarket replacement gasket. I wold reccommend cutting .050 or the max amount the shop will cut for the base price. This will make up for the difference in gasket thickness, and maybe give a "SLIGHT" increase in compression.

That is not out of line. You get what you pay for, and good machine shops (or any machine shops) are getting more scarce. If you have stainless valves (like engnbldr) then I would not bother with the hardened seats.

Guide work also drives-up the cost and the intake valve guides are often OK in well used engine / heads.
There may-be some savings if you just do the exhaust valve guides (6) instead of all 12.
