Post subject:  How To Buy a Used Super Six Engine
Hi All,

I am looking at buying a used 74-76 225 Super Six complete engine to replace my current 100% stock 225 set-up.

The sale includes:

"Mopar 225 " Super Six" / Carb to oil pan Engine is removed from car and on a stand

Approximately 3000 miles on engine.

Engine block is new along with many other parts. Pistons, cam, water pump, fuel pump ect.

Pertronixs electronic ignition.

OEM aluminum two barrel intake, headers included.

Google Mopar super six for more information

I have videos of engine running.

I also have custom bent exhaust from headers to under floor for A-Body car."

Does anyone have advice on what this set-up is worth, assuming everything is listed accurately?

What other questions should I ask the seller?

No real way to know,
what brand parts were used?
who built the engine?
are they telling the truth?

In my opinion, a used engine is a used engine...

worth from a few hundred dollars, to maybe $1000.00 or so,.
I personally would never pay more than a few hundred for a used engine unless I new for certain the exact condition of it.
I would rather buy a good core and spend the money building it properly if it came down to that.

I'm always leery of buying an engine that has been "rebuilt" unless it comes with paperwork.

Lately folks on Craigslist seem to think a running Slant is worth north of $400, I see people trying to sell them in my area for close to $700.. and no one is buying at that price.

If it's in a car that I can drive first, I might consider giving more, but an engine out of the car without paperwork, I consider a core and pay accordingly.

Unless I am familiar with the owner/builder I go by what the parts I can see are worth to me. Internal parts mean nothing unless they will pull the head or pan for a look, and that is usually not going to happen on a running engine. I have seen way too many threads on the internet about "I bought this from so and so and it blew up 10 minutes after I got it running".

"Engine block is new along with...." What does that mean? Did they buy a factory new block from Chrysler? Or is that confused verbiage that doesn't mean anything to the seller? If a seller can't communicate clearly to me, I don't have to trust his integrity.

I agree with the above.
What is meant by, "engine block is new"?
If you could hear it run, that would be nice.

Ever hear of a "Rust-oleum Rebuild?"

At the very least, you need to open it up, and know what it is you are looking for.
Gaskets are cheap.
If it is legit, the seller should have no objection to opening it up, and showing off all the nice new machine werk...


Other wise it is just a pretty piece of iron on a stand.

It sounds like a good thing, including the exhaust pipes and what not.
How well do you know the seller?
Did you tell him the application or did he mention it first?
What it seems to be, and what it is can vary greatly.
Remember the old adage, "Caviote Emptore", meaning, buyer beware.
