Hello Guys, I'm finally going to give my 84 D150 an HEI. I went to order the carb Dan suggested in a previous thread of mine (Carter BBS for a 74 D100) I was just getting ready to order it but I noticed it has an electric auto choke. My truck does not. It has the manifold heat riser choke thingamadobob, which it works great. Is this Carter BBS 1 barrel a good fit for my truck? And what do I need to do with it to make the choke on it work, switched 12 volt source? And will it bolt right up to my intake manifold? Thanks a ton in advance. |

In order for the electric choke to work properly, you should use a relay to supply the power. (google how to wire a relay) I used a Holley 1920, and a Holley 1945 single barrel carb on my 1982 D150 and it worked fine. I now upgraded to new Weber 38/38 and I like it a lot better. You can trust Dan's advice, if he says the BBS will work, then it will work. |

It will bolt right up and should work no problem for your engine. All the choke needs is a switched 12v source, I've used the 12v feed to the ballast resistor as the jump off point to the choke. It's a low load mechanism, though if you wanted to put a relay on it you could, I think it may be overkill. ~THOR~ |

Thank you guys so much for the reassurance. I'm gonna go ahead and get that thing. My old girl is acting all kinds of crazy now days. Starving for fuel, that or the lean burn ignition is finally starting to act up. But we are about to make her feel alot better. Have I mentioned how this thing WON'T QUIT!! This old slant is still kicking and I have NO idea how many miles is on her. I have another engine to build up for the truck though, but why be in a hurry? Heck this motor may outlast me, LOL |

I know what you mean.. I'm on my second engine. (D150). The engine that came with the truck broke rings in three cylinders. And it still got me back home from a 150 mile drip that has a very steep mountain range to climb. The engine that is currently in in came from Craigslist. I bought it for $200.00. The only guarantee I got was a gentleman's hand shake saying that the engine was still in good shape. I put it into my truck and started it up.. This was about 5 or 6 years ago.. And it is still going strong. |
