| Post subject: | Slant Six horsepower variants |
Greetings to all from "Downunder". I am trying to understand what horsepower variants of the 225CU Inch slant six were available, derived, from the beginning, up until the 1969 model year. I have had communication with the former engine man from the Chrysler Australia Ltd years but one variant eludes the memory. In 1962 when the engine first came here they were all 145HP fully imported. Along the journey we did some assembly work on imported components and for the 1968 model year (Designated VE Valiant here) there was a 160HP variant that essentially had slightly different valve timing as I understand it and a Carter 2 barrel carb. For the 1969 model year (Designated VF Valiant) there was a sports version named the Pacer that was rated at 185HP. This engine sported locally made headers/extractors and maybe a slight cam. So the question is, up until 1969 was there ever a 185HP variant of the Slant Six produced in the US or allied markets and if so, what colour was the engine painted and what were the critical specifications? I appreciate any advice on the Slant Six variants up until 1970 when the engine was replaced by a locally engineered upright straight six. Kind regards, Jim |

I wish that a 185-hp 225 was produced for the U.S., that is why they sold V8s to us. That you got one is interesting to me. That's about what I'd like to build. |

I do not know of any US Slant 6 (225) from the factory that was rated over 145 HP. I believe you could get the dealer-installed "Hyperpak" option in the very early 60s on a 225, but I do not know the HP rating or if there was one. All 1bbl and 2bbl 225s in cars, regardless of camshaft differences, were rated at 145 HP (SAE gross) until thie early 70s (72?), when they went to SAE net ratings and then the HP dropped down substantially. In general, Oz got the better end of the inline 6 world, since in the US the V8 took over for any kind of performance starting in the late 50s. Cheap gas was one of the things making this possible. We are still in that mode, since in the US gas is again pretty close to its lowest price ever (inflation adjusted). Lou |

Wow Dart, thank you! That is really interesting that you guys only had 145HP Slant Sixes up until beyond the engine life here in Australia. Our 160HP variant from the 1968 model year onward had different valve timing and a two BBL Carter carb from the "original" 145HP single BBL version. Now my mission is to find maybe two local variants of the venerable and venerated Slant Six! Chrysler Australia Ltd had been plodders in the local industry here until 1962 when the RV1 and then the SV1 Valiants were introduced. The Slant Six produced double, yes double, the horsepower of the GM offering and almost double that of Fords local family sedan offering. Advertised as "The Finest of the Three" the Valiant Slant Six swept all before it and produced terrific sales results for Chrysler. By 1981 the company was dead here and the factories were sold to Mitsubishi but there was an almost twenty year history of some really interesting cars. I had previously thought that the local nuts didn't fall far from the Detroit oak tree but perhaps I need to dig deeper here. All the best, Jim |

Glad to help. We had 2bbl (Carter BBD) variants here, and with bigger cams from the late 60s to a final revision 71 than in the early 60s. The 2bbls were called "supersix" and mostly were offered in the 70s and 80s, but did not have a higher HP rating even though they undoubtedly had higher HP. Lou |

For details on the "145 hp" rating, in quotes because it's just about as substantially fictitious as all the rest of the ratings we're going to throw around in this thread, see here and here The "160 hp" 2bbl Slant-6, available in Australia and South Africa and other markets outside North America starting in '67, used the 244°-duration camshaft, originally devised for the 2bbl marine version of the engine a couple years before, which the 1bbl engines also got starting in '71. In South Africa there was a 190 hp "Charger 190" version in the early 1970s—2bbl; perhaps higher compression, etc. In Argentina there was a "180 hp" version with twin 1bbl carbs and other goodies, such as this front exhaust manifold used in conjunction with a cut/capped rear half of a stock exhaust manifold. I've never seen pics or specifics on the exhaust manifold/manifolds used on the Australian VF Pacer 225. |

This image is for the D engine that came in 1970 but the extractor/headers are the same deal as for the later 1969 VF Pacer. http://moparmarket.com.au/images_user/r ... e67dbd2445 This next image is for a very early VF Pacer with the two piece cast exhaust uppers that were joined to two piece mandrel bent tubes going into one similar to the previous. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... 26744).jpg Because of the right hand drive issues with the Slant Six oil filters and vacuum brake boosters finished up on left side of the engine which in turn created issues with the extractors/headers and still allowing access to the starter motor. Stay safe out there, Jim |

Oops, finger trouble. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... 26744).jpg This has been most informative for me. I had no idea the boys here had gone rogue so early in the piece. Stay safe out there, Jim |

I thought the 1bbl was rated at 100 and the 2bbl was 110? Lou |

I'll bet those high horsepower models had an aluminum head. |
