Bobby Rogers sent me the following info on Clay City:
DD
Clay City -Sat. July 19 3PM
18 Slant Six cars in attendance. Charles Meyers got ill on trip and returned home, missing the event.

Jim Cox in the Cox Bros. Dart was low qualifierwith a 10.06 @ 130 mph and could go quicker with the night session and cooler air. We may see another 9 second Slant car this weekend!

After 2 SL6 qualifing rounds, the Fast Four are:
Tom Drake 10.76 @ 118
Ron Hamby 11.59 @ 105
Dale Rose 11.64 @114

Barry Harrison was 5th with a 11.78 and may hit the spray to move up in the next session.

Ron Parker ran his first 1/4 mile time with the new Gary Bruner motor and went 12.91 @ 102 mph.

Hillside Six was in attendance after missing several meets last year and a FOR SALE sign appeared in the rear window of Merril Bruners car. (No big surprise, Merril has about 50 cars!)

The graphics decals were gone in about 20 minutes and I hope all the guys will have them on the cars for the first round of the Shootout.
Overall the meet appeared to be down in show cars and racers, especially Super Stock cars. Bracket cars were probably around 100-120.
Let's see what Sunday brings.
Bobby

More news...

The Cox boys made a few mid-11 sec non-nitrous runs after the 10.06 on Saturday morning, but broke a timing chain and bent up a bunch of valvetrain parts to put them out for the rest of the weekend. They had burned one plug on the 10.06 run, and had richened that cylinder up a bit, which would have almost certainly put them in the 9s. Another day...

The Davis team showed up with their sweet Dart sport and were running 11.70s-80s all weekend on alky. They went several rounds in Box and in the Slant race, and were still in when I left yesterday at 1 pm.

Barry Harrison showed up running 11.50s on spray before cooking a head gasket on Saturday.

Norm Foster was the trooper of the weekend. After having two flats on his trailer and a generator failure on his motorhome, he sheared the tailhousing off his 904 at the end of a pass (won the round). He layed on the ground for 3 hours fixing it, made the next round, then broke his driveshaft in HALF at the end of that run!! He won that one too, but was out for the weekend. He was running very respectable 13.0s with very good lights too. Bummer.

The Giant Killer, Seymour Pederson, showed up running consistent 14.70s with his '62 Valiant street car on Sam's club 205/70-14 tires, and got a single run, a bye run, and a Drake's broke run to go 3 rounds before bowing out to Ron H in the 4 round. Tom Drake and I are putting up a bounty of $50 for the 1st 10 sec car to knock Seymour out in the 1st round of a Slant race.

Ron H won the Slant race, as you may have guessed, over Dale Rose in the final. They met again in the Fast 4 final, and all eyes were on Hamby as he prepared to juice his car for the whole 1/4 mile after a 1st 1/8th nitrous shot (mid 11s)to defeat Jason Davis in the semis. His 1/8th mile time showed 6.73 (pretty sure), which would have put him solidly in the 10s. Unfortunately, his car didn't shift into 2nd and he bounced off the rev limiter for a little before recovering. Dale took the Fast 4 win with a best ever 11.42.

Rodney, Meril, Jason, Larry and some others were still in the bracket classes when I left on Sunday.

The small timer Lou Madsen showed up with his street/road race '64 Dart and layed down a couple of mid 14s @93 after some tuning on the EFI and timing, and some 5spd launch practice. Best improvement of the day was a full second gain on back-back runs with a EFI fuel map leanout, good launch (2.10 60 ft) and 5 deg timing retard. Car averaged 24 MPG on the trips there and back at 75 MPH too!

Happy Slanting,

Lou

Great review Lou...
Sounds like a great time, did Elam show-up for pizza?

Did you get see the Cox Bros. busted T. chain? Was it one of the JP Performance sets? Timing chains are not what we expect to break, I need to get more info. on that failure.

Doc just as soon as they came out of the burn out it let go.
They tried to re-fire it but no compression, we know what happened. Thanks Possum Parker

Lou i will match that 50 dollars for the first 10 second car to put out Giant Killer Pederson in the first round. I also will give 100 dollars to Giant Killer Pederson if he beats a 10 second car in the first round. Thanks Possum Parker

Ron, Sounds like Seymour is the Big Man around town! Tom Drake is talking about a flyer/poster for the next race that Seymour will definitely make. :D Maybe he'll even make a test'n'tune up in MN before the next race to brush up...

Doug, it was a JP chain, but they said it had been in the motor for 1.5-2 years without trouble - lots of passes with 0.700" cams.

Elam did not make it, so we were bummed. He missed his chance for pizza and hair-raisin' ride in my '64. We had a mini Pizza Hut outing on Friday night with Seymour, Charlie, Kent Nichols (nice guy!) and myself. You were sorely missed by all. Didn't even get dinner on Saturday due to late racing and Seymour and I couldn't talk enough while he was swapping tires on his car.

Sunday, footbrake race, got down to 10 cars, with Rodney, Meril, and myself still in. Meril and I were elimininated, don't know what happened with Meril, but I went .497 red, against a .506 green. Rodney went out in the quarters. Don't know what went on in the box class.

I hear Howard Davis and the Hillside Six car went a number of rounds in box. I'm still trying to get ahold of him for details.
Overall a pretty good showing for the Slant cars even though most of the super fast cars were not at this race. :?

Congrats to Charlie, Meril, and Rodney on the good no-box showing on Sunday!

Doug, I'll be sending you my pics of the show (about 30) in the next couple of days.

That Davis crew is a solid race team!

Yea i know Bagel i need to slow my mouth down and speed my brain up. We did not get a handle on the carb set up at Clay City and talked to the Holley folks and it was a no brainer. I should have seen this but was to dumb to figure it out at the time. I think we can get the car down to mabye low 8th this weekend with the right carb set up. The car ran out at 5800 rpm in the 1/4 and was still pulling strong with 4.30 gears. I have not decided to go with 4.56 gears or not. What do you think.
Ps who is that 318 kid who wants to match race you does he know who he is dealing with. Later Dude Possum Parker

Bagel going to whup that 318 kid

Lou - If you have any photos of the Fast Four race on Sunday, would it be too much trouble to send something to Seymour? He asked me to get some pictures, but I couldn't find my camera. Also, did you get any pictures of the final round on Saturday? If so, could you e-mail them to me (slantsixdart@aol.com)? Thank you!

Kay and all,

I think I have good pics of the Fast 4 race, and I believe of the final round as well. Been in the throes of buying a house this week so I'm very busy. I will definitely email you pics and get then to Seymour and/or Doug in the next few days (already talked to them about it).

Congrats on the win! You guys always earn it.

Ron, what was your carb problem that the Holley guys helped with??

Cheers,

Lou
