Just bought a 65 Dart 270 with the slant and 904 transmission. Previous owner had an offenhauser intake and Holley 390 on it. #1 cylinder has maybe 30 psi compression, and I have some pretty good blowby. believe I have carbon buildup on the exhaust valve. I put the #1 at TDC and ran compressed air into the cylinder, could see some fumes come out of the exhaust pipe. Also, valve train is really loose? Anybody know where I can send the head to get some work done? None of my local shops are real knowledgeable about the SL6. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’d like to build a 200rwhp N/A SL6.

Sounds like a fun project. Where are you located? Have you adjusted the valve lash? If not, do that before anything else and do your compression check again. Valve train is supposed to be loose when the valves are closed.

Cheers,
Lou

Oklahoma City. I have not adjusted the valve lash. Is that something that needs to be done while it’s running?

The factory procedure is w/engine off and at normal operating temp. I do it this way. Check out a factory service manual. You should consider buying Doug's new Slant 6 engine book!

I used Somers Racing in Vancouver WA to do a mild porting job and rebuild my head. It wasn't cheap, but I like their work.

What is a realistic power output with mild head porting and a small cam running a 4 barrel Holley?

My entire car is still sitting on shelves in the shop. I've been acquiring parts for two years. But I think I'm just about there and ready to go. When I get it put together, the gurus I have consulted with say I should get about 165HP and 230 TQ out of the slant.
