Hey,

I'm alittle confused about transmission's and the Lock-up converters vs. non-lockup converters.

I have a 1980 Plymouth Volare and want to get a shift kit for it, but there are none offered for a 1980 just up to 1979. was there any major difference between the two years? Also about converters, which is better for racing, non lockup or lockup? i want to get a 2800rpm stall, would this be ok on the street? thanks..

Justin

The valvebody shape changed in 1980, as for the actual shift kit mods, an eariler kit will do the job.

For racing, non-lock-up. Lock-up clutch will burn-up with a lot of WOT applies.
Truth is that the factory programmed the valvebody to not lock the converter at WOT.

a non-lockup converter won't work in your trans.. just find an earlier 904 non lockup tranny and freshen it up while you drive your current one...

Hey dude, I've got two! Both are 1975's. Non-lock -up on both. I rebuilt and ran one in my wife's car for about 3000 miles.(she blew up the car, and the trans came out with the motor) When I rebuilt it, I put a shift kit into it and new converter. Nice and fresh and tested. I also have the other trans that has never been touched. It needs to be gone through as it leaks from the pan gasket and tailshaft. Sound interesting? godspeedglen@aol.com

i guess you could change the front pump and valve body in yours to allow a non-lockup converter to work:

but i'd just rebuild a whole non-lockup tranny while you drive your current set up

Hey

Well saying my Cylenderhead is in the shop being done and i'm still rolling around with a 7.25 rear, i think i'll replace that next, then do the trans stuff...

one other thing that i'm hopeing still works, is i have a linkage mounted floorshifter out of an 80 Volare, i sure hope this still works with an older trans (will it have the small mount for the bracket on the trans still?)

I think the 1981-83 S6 transmissions did away with the lock-up torque converter but retained the wide ratio gear set.
Or was it just the 1981-up California S6 cars that did away with the lock-up? Have to do some digging in my books again.
