I'm (temporarily) running a 1985 peanut head cylinder head on a 1968 barracuda. The coolant temperature sensor is much larger on the '85 head then it is on the '68. Does anyone know what part number I need for the correct temperature sensor that will work with the '68 Rallye gauges (non idiot light)? This could be a very obvious question, but I'm stumped.

Try this sender with this connector (yellow wire should go to your existing temp sender wire, black to ground).

I'll go that route if I have to Dan (TY for the quick reply!!!), but am hoping to find one that will appear more OE for the application - perhaps a one-wire solution.

Why not use a brass adapter and the 68 sender. Or, just plug the big hole and tap a new one for the 68 sender.

Great idea @badvert65 would you have a part number or link for that?

You need a pipe thread bushing, I'll be honest, don't recall what size they are, but maybe 1/4-1/8 NPT reducing bushing......whatever, they are not an uncommon item............

Hardware store item.

Your '68 sensor can go in the npt threaded hole above #1 exhaust port. The 2 larger npt threaded holes next to the thermometer can be blocked.

@badvert65, the bushing idea was genius, I certainly wasn't seeing the forest through the trees. So as to help the next person who runs into this situation - the brass reducer bushing size that works is 3/8" M X 1/8" F, and was as close as my Ace Hardware Store for cheap. Thanks to all! -Chris

@kesteb, the thread pitch isn't a match, couldn't do that.

Funny, a 1/8-27 NPT tap works in that hole for every head that I have. So I don't see why yours would be different. But I am glad that you found a solution.

IIRC, I ran into the thread pitch thing on one of my heads, and it was straight thread, not pipe.
