Last year I built a 170 engine in a hurry to make the Clay City race (wanted to set the "D" nitrous record). Engine would not run right (flat, no snap). After the race I parked the car, so I could catch up on "real life" projects. I just decided to spend a little time on the car/engine to find he problem. Boy, did I screw up. Found the cam was centerlined at about 120* atdc. So just reset cam for 104* atdc. Hope to get the engine back together, today. Just goes to show even someone as perfect as I am can make one mistake |

I thought a 170 doesn't need the cam advance of a 225. |

To be honest, I don't know for sure what cam I put in this engine. I was in a big hurry, and just grabbed parts of the shelf, and made no notes. It was like three days, pull old engine, build new engine, install engine and get running. I think it is probably my first slant six cam (bought in 1978) Crane S-264. That cam is supposed to be installed at 106*, if I remember right, so 104* is fine. I know it is better the 120* CL. Whether this engine will be good enough to get in the 7's in the 1/8 mile remains to be seen.

Congrats, Charlie. Mistakes will always happen. Finding and correcting them can be very rewarding too... Lou |

Don't have it running, yet. Did a cold engine compression test, to compare to the hot engine test I did with the old cam setting. HUGH difference. Cam at 120 CL, compression was 120-125 psi. With cam at 104 CL compression was 180-185 There was a post either on this site or FABO about how much compression would change when advancing the cam. There is the answer. Well, back to work, need to finish hooking up everything. |

I put my Clifford in at 90° once. Results were similar. Pulled like a freight train until 3500 and fell off a cliff. |

I did that once... cl'd the #1 exhaust with the specs for #1 intake. It was bizarre... like bad trippin on lsd for engine builders. Greg |

Charlie, There are only two results, winning and learning. If you get it right, that's a win. If you screw up, make a mistake, that is a learning experience. Embrace mistakes, because these are the fastest and most permanent ways of improving/learning. I can't recall who said it, but basically it was "make mistakes early and often" that is the best way to succeed. If you never make mistakes, you really haven't learned anything. brian |

And Charlie has shown us that a slant can run at near miller cycle cam specs! CJ |

Or maybe that's Atkinson cycle. One of those. CJ |
