So I was driving it in my apt and all of a sudden on acceleration I hear knocking. So I parked it but it sounds like a pushrod or a lifter. It still start and runs , on idle you don't hear it unless you hit the gas any ideas on what it can be? |

I assume it's a Lebaron, as shown in your profile? What was the last gas that you put into it? If it's crappy gas, might it be a bit of detonation, or pinging? Roger |

#1 That sounds like a rod knock. Sorry. #2 You cannot check the oil level with the engine running as oil is flying around and wetting the dipstick. The engine should be off for a minute or so to allow the oil to drain into the pan for an accurate reading. |

Where are you in Houston? I have a similar vintage cast-crank short block in the vicinity of Hobby Airport, which you can have for free if you come get it. Condition unknown, but it does turn over. Send me a PM if you're interested. |

When I was in High School, the shop instructor used plastic pliers to individually (1 at a time) pull plug wires from an engine running at idle that was knocking. When he got to the cylinder with the bad rod, the knock went away. Anyone else tried or had success identifying a bad rod this way? |

Could be cause when I first got her running I put in reverse and the eagle wouldn't move so I put in drive it moved ,so then I put it in reverse and it moved sluggish but did then I realized it only moves really when the idle is smooth but that's only when it's in gear so little confused on that?

Anyone else tried or had success identifying a bad rod this way? I kind of don't believe it cause I pulled wires where the sound is #1 and #2 area no sound change no nothing but I have tried |

The sound in the video is exactly how a rod knock sounds. A loose converter bolt has a higher repetition to the clatter as it will sound with every revolution of the crankshaft. Every time the protruding bolt passes by the rear block flange it will hit and make a clatter. A bad rod bearing usually only sounds out on the down stroke of the combustion cycle. Every other crank shaft revolution, a rod bearing knock also sounds ‘hollow’ exactly like the sound in the video. |
