Educate me...why did Chrysler use the low mount starter position on a Slant Six? I've seen it on vans, which might make sense, but I think it's also been used on trucks...I can't see the reason for it.

That's the V8 starter location. It was used on Slant-6 trucks and vans with V8 transmissions, before the 1967 or '68 advent of the A727RG (727 automatic with Slant-6 bellhousing pattern).

So in that photo, which is a 3 speed manual, they similarly used a V8 bellhousing because they had no 6 cyl bellhousing? Because they wanted a larger clutch?

Larger clutch—the direct-drive starter as shown in that pic was used because its smaller 25mm 9-tooth drive pinion better accommodated the 11" clutch; the gear-reduction starter's 33mm 10-tooth pinion would've required moving the starter further outward which, given that starter's lateral outboard offset, would've probably just taken up too much space in at least some applications.

Thanks. This rig is for sale locally....I could go buy it but I have no need for it....I just hate to see a Slant 6 go homeless. I suspect this is the same feeling ladies with 32 cats have.
