Hey everybody. I stumbled upon this single barrel, cast iron intake that is not like any I have seen before. Attachment: IMG_2559.JPG [ 74.45 KiB | Viewed 4631 times ] Is this something special, or was that how they all looked at one time. I have been told that this manifold set and the head they were attached to all came from an aluminum block engine. If true, that would date these pieces '61-'63, correct? |

I assume you don't have access to the head they came off of. If you do, look for the word "SPECIAL" cast onto it. The "special" marked heads were reserved for the aluminum block. I can't lay claim to knowledge concerning the lack of torque specs on the #1 runner, but it makes a certain amount of sense that Chrysler didn't discover the exhaust manifold cracking problem until the engine had been in the field for awhile, and mechanics has started cranking down the nuts in order to compensate for leaking exhaust/intake gaskets, thus causing the crack problem. Speaking of exhaust manifolds cracking, if that intake is original to an early 60s engine, then the exhaust manifold was replaced at some point. The one in the picture has the later reinforcing ribs on it. |

Pretty sure my 68 manifold has no lettering on it. I prefer it that way, much as I prefer guns made before they were forced to put all that stupid safety lettering on the barrels. |

Exactly what I was thinking, but my limited experience had me wondering.

That could be the case here. This exhaust seems to be good, un-cracked. It has a locked up heat riser valve, though.

The instructions cast into the manifold came along in the early 1970s. Before that, smooth-top runners like this what you show. Neither that intake nor that exhaust originally came on a '61-'63 engine; the intake appears to be a '65-'69 item, and the exhaust manifold is interesting in that it's got the raised section on № 3 runner (which was for this), but it does not have the heat tube, nor the holes for it. A head marked "SPECIAL" would have definitely originally been placed atop an aluminum block, but not all aluminum blocks got heads marked "SPECIAL"—only early-production units in '61. Then came heads with a 5-pointed star in that location, and then sometime late in the '62 model year the head was commonised for use on both the aluminum and iron block, and it reverted to bearing the number 2206035 in that location. |

(I should have finished my thought: it's not the first one of those exhaust manifolds I've seen; I think for awhile they were using that casting either drilled or undrilled for the heat tube) |
