New member here. Ive got an 82 D150 that belonged to my grandpa. I am trying to id what exactly I have with this slant thats in the truck. Its an original 6 cyl truck but im not sure the engine thats in it is the original. What I have is as follows. It has the Spark Control Computer on the breather and it is hooked up. From what I have read, if I have spark control, I should have a dist that has no vac advance. It has an electronic dist with vac advance. It also had a Carter 2bbl carb that dont have any electronic controls on it. Super Six?? Just about all of the vac lines are disconnected and plugged except the line from dist to carb. All smog equipment is gone. The engine will not run unless the spark control box is plugged in. There is no electronic ign module or ballast on the truck.

I believe this engine has been swapped in at some point. My question is this. If I already have an electronic dist, can I go ahead and wire up an elect ign module, ballast and new coil and do away with the lean burn computer? Right now it seems as though the comp is still controlling the ign system.

I know this has been beaten to death but just trying to figure out what I have and what I need to do to get the truck and engine running reliably. It runs decent now but has an odd ball miss at idle. Thanks.

I believe that you are correct.
With a 2bbl carb and a mopar vacuum advance electronic distributor you are starting with some good parts.
I would eliminate the lean burn module and do the HEI ignition. If you run a relay you can trigger the relay from the wire that sends power to the lean burn module in the key start and run position. The lean burn system did not use a ballast resistor and neither will the HEI ignition.

Thanks for the reply. Ive got some pictures of the dist and carb but it says my files are too large to upload. I think I can do the full elect ign upgrade and be good. Im a diesel mech by trade and very mech inclined but I will admit that I dont have much experience with gasoline engine ignition systems. Im sure I can figure it out but I just needed to know what I was dealing with to start off with if that makes sense. Thanks again.

my '83 D150 was also a hand me down from my dad,,It also had the Lean Burn module on the air cleaner,,for vibration and heat, wonder who would lay claim to that great idea?

That truck also had a Carter 2 bbl, IIRC those carbs are suspect for vacuum leaks at the throttle plate shaft as they age, so be aware of that.

It would be helpful for you to get a Factory Service Manual, I found mine on E bay some time ago, there are also electronic copies available but I like the hard copy.

For cheap replacement parts, sign up for the Factory Close outs at RockAuto,, from time to time they come up with come up with wheel cylinders, universal joints, front suspension parts, belts-hoses-sparkplugs for those old Dodge trucks at crazy low prices.
