I installed a deep pan with a pick up extension that puts the filter back near the floor of the pan on the 68 Barracuda I did not adjust the OE transmission dip stick or tube,, as I am thinking that the original marks would still be the ones to use. I am just putting more fluid above the filter-pick up,, so Hot full is still Hot Full and Add is still Add,,,, is that correct? |

In my ignorance, I would agree. |

Yes, that is correct. ![]() |

Is the extension needed? Maybe for drag racing, to keep the pickup submerged during a run? I have a deep pan on the shelf. I thought about putting it in, but it would be about the lowest thing on the car. |

On the advice of my trans guy I ran a deep pan on my red car with no extension for a full season. He wanted to see what difference it really made. He tore the trans down after the season to look around. Nothing was worn out or damaged. ![]() |

If you fill up to the "full" dipstick level, and there is not too much slosh (cornering, braking, accel forces), then it should not matter at all. I always am sloshing my car around, so I would run the lowered pickup. Lou |

The idea behind an increased capacity pan is primarily to help ensure you don't uncover the pickup and suck air. If you don't use the extension, the extra fluid becomes most useless. It, or other fluid just like it, just sits on the bottom of the pan doing very little for you. |

Correct. You do get a more fluid mass to aid in cooling, but I agree if you are not using the extended pickup then the usefulness of the deep pan is greatly reduced. Lou |

When I run a deep pan, I use the extension, and run the fluid about a 1/2 to 1 Qt low, to keep the fluid away from the rotating parts. |
