Post subject:  Oil Pump Source?

I need to obtain an oil pump for a 1968 225 that I'm converting to hydraulic lifters. The cam is new from Oregon Cams. No oil pump came with the engine, though I have several pumps on the shelf taken off non-hydraulic engines more than 20 years ago; condition unknown.

Are the factory pumps still available? Source?

is the Melling M-66C the recommended pump?

Do I need a metal gear for a driver?

TIA

I have used the Melling with good success.

Other parts from EngineTech have been good, but I have not used the oil pump for a slant from them.

An oil pump from a mechancial lifter engine should work just fine with a hydraulic lifter engine. The differences in the oiling systems are in the rear cam bearing journal, cam lobe shape, rocker arm shaft, rocker arms, pushrods, and lifters. I have successfully converted mechanical cam motors to hydraulic lifters using the original mechanical lifter oil pump.

The original factory oil pump for the solid lifter engine had a rotor thickness of 5/8 inches. The after market "stock" replacement pumps had a rotor thickness of 7/8 inches (hi volumm, compared to the factory pump). I don't have much knowledge of the hydraulic engines, but one I have looks to have the thicker pump, and looks factory.

PS: all oil pumps have a metal gear, it is the distributor that has the plastic gear.

Another vote for the Melling M66C, although all my experience is on solid-lifter engines.

Thanks for all the input.

I decided not to take a chance with the pumps on the shelf and ordered from Rock Auto today.

I've used these on my builds with no issues, if a daily driver it won't be an issue...that being said....
they are easy to install if the engine is out of the car...The thick rotor on the 66-C and even thicker
66-HV, will not come completely out of the block in a 67-80 car without pulling the rotor cover plate and bolts
first for the rest of the assembly to clear the passenger wheelwell and suspension....the stock oil pump
does not have this problem. FYI.

Fortunately, the engine is on stand.
