Okay which one of you is Doug? My guess is Doc, am I correct? :P

Anyway, for Doug, do you take new gears so you can take 'em in and harden 'em? I've got the gear from the new pump I can send you, since I'll either use the gear from the old pump, or (if it's trashed) get a hardened gear from you.

BTW the gear from the new pump doesn't have a keyway.

Bob has it worked-out... 8)
Both Doc & Doctor Dodge are user IDs that I use.
If you look at posting times it becomes clear, Doc is the ID I have loaded onto the computer at work, Doctor Dodge is the machine at home.
No matter which ID I use, I sign messages with....

On oil pump gears, I am already collecting more for the next heat treat run so I will take any unhardened ones people have.
I still have a bunch of hardened ones for the last run we did in May, 2003

Doc, what do you charge for the hardened gears? Also, about how much durability gain do you think it adds? I'm not racing a slant six and don't plan on it, but I might eventually be replacing the oil pump in one for some reason, and if available pumps are all higher volume than stock, a hardened gear might be a good thing to install.

$30.00 for a "Dutra Special" case hardened gear.
These gears have been lapped, case hardened to 42 Rc, .015 deep and then parkerized. (parkerizing is the same oil retaining coating used on camshaft lobes)

There are well over 50 of these hardened gears in the hands of users.
I have had two returned because they cracked along the key slot during install and recently had one returned from Rick C. showing gear tooth wear, along with his flat lobe cam. I have to say that the hardened gear was in better shape then the cam gear but both were showing erosion.

Basically using a hardened gear is good "insurance" but it is not "bullitproof".
