First time installing a new pickup tube. So much crud in the old one it could be a maraca. Trying to go by the Doug Dutra book which seems to say the screen enclosure should hit the pan when there’s no gasket. Picture shows that it’s pretty much there. Does this look good to you guys? Thanks in advance (FYI, 1977 engine)

I would first think you should set pan on a large wood block and very gently thump the dent out of the pan
using another piece of 2X4 to prevent small dents caused by using only hammer.

Agreed with Fopar. I assumed you used white paint or something to make those marks? Looks good to me, then recheck after you thump out the dent.

That’s a little white lithium grease (it was the first thing I found).
I didn’t realize there was a dent, but I will for sure try to flatten things out. I guess the grandma who had the car this engine came (one-owner ‘77 Aspen SE sedan) from maybe ran over a curb once or something.
Thanks for your help.
