Post subject:  Is there a "cutoff date" for rebuilding a NOS carburetor?

I consulted the FAQ, read the "how to use the search function" info, and performed a few quick searches, but I've failed to turn up a manageable number of relevant hits.

I know gaskets deteriorate over time, and I understand old carbs were not designed with today's fuel additives in mind. That said: is there a "cutoff year" of carburetor manufacture after which I could sensibly bolt on a NOS carb without rebuilding it? I seem to recall some folks saying that's the best approach in certain situations, but I can't remember where.

(I'm specifically thinking about Carter BBS 7044s and Carter BBD 6537s carburetors, both of which were manufactured in the mid-to-late '70s.)

Nothing runs like a new carb—a real one, not the Chinese copycat trinkets.

In theory, you have to be all worried about old gaskets and stuff.

In practice, better than 9/10 times all you have to do is use an unbent paper clip to carefully push the inlet needle off its seat (they stick with years of sitting on the shelf), install the carb, spray some light oil—WD40 is fine—into the carb bowl through the internal and/or external vents and operate the throttle lever a few times to lube the accelerator pump plunger, start the engine, and make your adjustments.

The carburetors used in the A-body era tend to be just fine in as-manufactured form with the 10% ethanol in most US and Canadian gasoline. Ethanol-related carburetor problems tend to crop up with "remanufactured" carburetors that have been abrasively cleaned—sandblasted, etc. This strips the passivation coating off the castings, leaving them very vulnerable to corrosion induced by alcohol and the water it carries.

The original gaskets and seals in a NOS BBS aren't going to dissolve in today's gasoline. The float's brass, so no problem there. The accelerator pump will be fine, that hasn't changed. Go ahead and run whatchya brung.

7044 was after market service replacement for 6583, and also came standard same year for 225-1 slant six. Both carbs listed for D 100 200 300 manual tranny. There is work around for purge port.

Thank you, slantsixdan and matv91. I am more than a little excited about these carbs. :)

Yes, the canister purge plumbing is handled as described here. But that's not the port I mentioned—I was talking about the (nonexistent) venturi vacuum tap for EGR. There is not really a workaround for that, except for simply not having EGR, which is a completely viable option.

BBS 7044 is not an aftermarket replacement carb, but it's no surprise if Chrysler supplied BBS 7044 ('74 Dodge truck 225/standard trans) as a service replacement for BBS 6583 ('74 Dodge van 225/standard trans).

BBD 6537 is 74-'76 Dodge truck 318/auto, non-California, heavy-duty emissions.
