Because I have split headers on my 63 Valiant, there is not much room to remove and install the shift cable using the method in the FSM. If I remove the pan, can I unhook and attach the cable from below? |

Yes. I actually find it easier to do it that way, and get the adjustment correct. It is a good chance to change the filter, and check the condition of the trans, by the amount of, or lack of debris in the pan. |

I agree with Charlie. It helps if you have a helper, one inside and you in the pan. Follow the FSM and it should work fine. My 62 pushbutton worked perfect after following the directions. You do have a manual to follow? |

Yes, a 63 Plymouth Valiant FSM. However, I think there is an error in it. (page 21-32) It says, "(4) Hold the control cable guide centered in the hole of the transmission case and apply only enough inward force (approximately two pounds) to bottom the assembly at the reverse detent. While holding the cable bottomed, rotate the adjustment wheel clockwise until it just contacts the case squarely." I have read other directions that say pull outward slightly instead of inward. |

I'm going off of memory here, but I think you push the cable in slightly for cars up to '64 and pull out slightly for '65 models. '65 uses a one-year arrangement that retains the shift cable but uses a floor shifter (with a Park position), so the valve body and cable adjustment is slightly different. I definitely agree it helps to do the adjustment with the pan off. You can verify your adjustment is correct by tightening the clamp bolt, having an assistant press the neutral button, and watch to make sure the finger on the interior linkage contacts the neutral safety switch on the side of the case. In some push-button 904s I've had bad luck just following the FSM's directions. |

Make sure you get the correct 60-65 filter. (It has two(2) oil feed holes)Many parts stores try to sell you the 66 & up filter (only 1 oil feed hole) and using one of those causes problems. DD |

I was surprised how easy it was to release the cable with the pan off. Thanks!

I would cut a hole in the late filters to match the R. pump pick up. These are larger filters as well. No problem. Also, when setting up push button cable after OH I would use a small mirror to look at the detent ball on top of valve body. Have another push the buttons 1-R/R-1 while I made sure the ball was in it's proper detent. Adjust accordingly. |
