I posted this in the "Other" section, but it might be a bit more appropriate here.

I have a friend who has a friend with a 62 Lancer. I was asked to find out where to get a new set of axle bearing for this car.

Not being too familiar with the 62 Lancer, I have a couple of questions.

Is this an early A body car? Like the 62 Valiant? If so, would it use the same rear end as all other A bodies? Given the difference in the drive shaft for the various rear end models.

A-Body 7 1/4 rearends use 3 different axle bearing sizes over the years.
- 60 to 62 (and some "spill-over" into 63) used the smallest bearing that is a real problem. These wear-out fast and are no longer available new.

- 63 to 72 / 76 (small lug pattern axles) has a larger bearing that is still available.

- 73 to 76 "big lug" used the largest axle bearing.

All the axle housings are made to fit a certain size bearing so if you want to up-grade, you need to swap housings.

I had mentioned to them that they may want to just look for a complete working abody rear.

I’m glad that I am finally picking up some tricks.

Thanks,

John

Of course if I’m wrong, let me know before I ruin someone’s life.

While we are on this subject -
Can any 7 1/4 rear from an A-Body work as a replacement ?

Specifically -
Are the Drum to Drum dimensions and the spring perch to spring perch
the same on the Early A-body(60-62), the Narrow A-Body (63-66), and the A-Body (67 up)?

Any A-body rear axle will bolt into any A-body car. All drum brake cars used the 5x4" bolt pattern. All disk brake cars before '73 used the 5x4" bolt pattern, all disk brake cars after '72 used the 5x4.5" bolt pattern.
