Hello!

Deep into the middle of a complete engine rebuild for this old Dodge. The car is my son's idea of beautiful (loves Virgil Exner's cars). It was a local Denver car and spent most of it's life parked at the old Gates Rubber plant (still has the parking sticker in the window).

After thinking it was the original engine we were rebuilding, I discovered that it's a 1962 motor (thanks to Mr. Dutra's book). I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.

Because of the Covid mess, both I and my buddy have time on our hands. My son and his car will be the beneficiary of all that.

Now if I can just find the right dark metallic turquoise paint for the block (a one year color only). Anybody here know what it was called and/or the paint code for it?

Good you've got that book; it's part of Doug's goldmine (the rest of which is throughout this board). The engine ID section was guest-written by some beardy dude named Dan.

Funny you should ask. Read this long thread all the way through—it was started long ago, so some of the older posts' pics no longer display correctly, but keep on reading through to the newer posts toward the end.

You'll want to read this post, too, and this one, and there are all kinds of good, highly cost-effective upgrades and improvements to be made to the engine (even beyond those mentioned in the book), transmission, and other components of the car. Definitely ask a lot of questions!

SlantSixDan: Thank you (& others!) for the rapid response! Was that Swiegals? I worked part-time for Dick Jr's (on Federal) Radiator shop back in the 80s and took completed units down there all the time. There were several other yards down there as well, all gone now. Denver is rapidly becoming LA, I fear.

Also.....is that AMC Blue (EN-66) the answer?

My Father had a 60 4 door Slant 6 3 speed manual when I was about 17 or so. Found out it would do 98 MPH. Don't remember why he got rid of it but like most of his cars he probably killed it with no maintenance.

Well, headed off to get a local company today to do the color-match thing. This harmonic balancer is from the original engine and when cleaned up seems to be fairly representative of the original motor color. The original motor mounts have a lot of color left as well. Talked to a local paint company and gave then the DuLux Deep Aquamarine Paint code (15657D2). The fellow there will use both to come up with something.

A 60 Phoenix down in an El Paso county scrap yard has the remnants of the color as well....

This Phoenix was the source of one of the aluminum intake manifolds mentioned earlier in the paint thread.

Another question....the "new" NAPA sourced fuel-pump actually damaged the cam (wore a groove in it) by having only limited arm travel. The original fuel pump seems rebuild-able if I can just find a kit. Have you folks ever heard of that problem as well? Just read FAQs and see that you have. I'll try to read more before asking any further questions.

More on that intake...

The only parts car we were able to find in close proximity. Already have the inner fenders from it. Sadly, most of it is roached.

Any tips for using this unit? Notice the original paint on the bottom.

Fuel pump rebuild kits come from Then & Now Automotive.

Careful where you buy parts; much of what you can still buy for old cars through normal lines of supply (local parts stores, RockAuto, etc) is poor-quality junk.

Parts are a problem even when you think they shouldn't be. NAPA stuff used to be the gold standard; no longer. Since they are competing with all the discount/junk outlets, it seems to be a race to the bottom. It wasn't like that in the 90s, but it clearly is now.

A little sheet-metal sure makes a big difference. Those fenders were a real challenge to locate and get shipped. My 16-year old managed the whole process.
