| Post subject: | Adding power brakes to a D150 |
My 1983 D150 has factory non power brakes. Would love to add power brakes to it. Get better braking performance. Master cyclinder isn’t all that old, what brake booster do you guys recommend as a add on? Or am I better off buying a whole new master cylinder with booster already? And any brands or sources you can recommend would be helpful. Thanks. |

I had a 79 with manual brakes, by 83 I thought PB had become "standard equip". |

It isn't because it's a miser package. I know a guy who had an 82 miser and it had PB. I have an 80 volare (currently all apart and a dormant project) that came with manual brakes. It didn't bother me all that bad. Neither did having manual brakes on that 79 D100 I had It did help alot to keep up on rear brake adjustment (star wheels didn't always self adjust as they should have, even when all parts of that part of the brakes were brand new) And no I ain't saying I had to give them a couple of clicks a week/ sometimes about every 3rd oil change or so. |

FYI- for some reason power brake boosters for the first and second generation D, W, AD, and AW series (1972-1993 trucks and Ramchargers and Traildusters) are no longer available in the aftermarket. See here: https://ramchargercentral.com/vehicle-h ... -anywhere/ I recommend contacting Booster Dewey in Portland, Oregon and seeing if they have a unit for you in stock. http://boosterdeweyexchange.com But remember- there are more differences than just a booster between a power brake system and a manual brake system. In addition to the brake booster, the wheel cylinders are different. If you decide to switch to a power brake setup you need to make sure you convert all the parts, not just add a booster. |

Power brake will make applying brake easier, by less pressure exerted by foot, but won't improve braking performance. Braking performance can only be improved by making sure your system is at factory specks, or by installing a disk brake upgrade of which there are many levels of performance to choose from. Often poor braking performance is the result of stuck wheel cylinders, or caliper pistons, out of adjustment shoes, and worn drums or disks. Just one stuck piston will greatly reduce stopping power. |
