Post subject:  Size of alternator bolts.

Hello,

66 Dart GT 225 no AC. Engine is missing the alternator and bolts, bracket is still there. Does anyone know the size of the bolts? Length, thread, washers needed, composition.

Thank you,

Jay

I have been doing some more research on this, can't find the information in the service manual, except that i believe the bolt is a 3/8-16. Anyway I also realize now i need the spacer too. Is anyone willing to measure the length of their bolt and post a photo of the alternator on their 225? Im affrid i may be missing the bottom bracket. This car was in a barn since 85 and throught the years it has been scavenged for brake and engine parts.

Hopefully that picture uploads. This is the cast iron lower bracket that would've probably come on a '66. There are two bolts that attach it to the engine block and one to the head. The annoying part is that two of these bolts are 3/8" while the third is slightly larger at 7/16". Pretty sure the larger one is the forward of the two bolts that go to the block. All are coarse thread and about 1.5" long. The stock ones from the factory had captive washers, so you'll want to throw washers on these if replacing them. I usually use blue loc-tite as well.

The two smaller holes are threaded, maybe 1/4"; these are where the stock ignition coil bracket attaches. (I usually relocate the coil to somewhere on the inner fender to keep it cooler.)

The "ears" on the bottom of the alternator attach to this bracket with a long 3/8" bolt and nut. Bolt is around 4" long.

The upper bracket is a stamped steel piece with a long slot in it for adjustment where it bolts to the alternator. It bolts to the front of the head with another short 3/8" bolt and to the alternator with a smaller bolt of some kind, probably 5/16".

Thank you SpaceFrank for the detailed explanation and photos, you nailed it, that's what appears to fit on the engine. Luckily the bracket is there, just hidden under some grease, dirt, and mice nesting. I still need the bolts to mount it to the brackets but that should be relatively easy to find. This forum and its members are awesome!!

No problem!

Keep in mind that sometimes the hole for the long bolt can get wallowed out on these, and allow the alternator to get cocked when under belt tension. Just check how well the pulleys line up when you get it all together. If you do have this problem, one way to fix that is drill the hole out to next larger size (on both the bracket and the alternator ears).
