| Post subject: | Power steering pump alignment |
I finished the a/c install on the Dart and now I want to add power steering. I removed the power steering system from a parts car. My question is about pulley alignment. I used the rear pulley for the ac compressor, the power steering pulley is mounted on the forward most position. Although I haven’t mounted the pump yet but it looks like it will no align with the front pulley. Were there different pumps used depending on whether the car has ac and power steering? Maybe a pump with a longer shaft for cars with both accessories? |

Power steering is driven off the front accessory pulley. |

"The Dart" could be anything from a '60 model to a '76. There were many different P/S pumps, brackets, and other components over that timeframe. What are you working on, please? Year and model, engine, and OBTW what kind of A/C compressor and bracket did you use? And what is the year and model of the parts car you pulled the P/S stuff from? |

It is a 1966 Dart with stock 225. I modified the original Compressor bracket from a 1966 Plymouth Valiant slant 6 And mounted a Sanden compressor. As I mentioned I aligned it with the rear most pulley. The parts car that the ps came from is a 1966 Dart as well with a TRW pump. All the pulleys came from the parts car. |

In most cases, the alternator and water pump run off the 'main' groove that is part of the harmonic damper and the PS pulley aligns with a front-mounted pulley that bolts to the damper. Some pics of your installation would be useful. |

I have found some pictures of offset pulleys used on some pumps. Anyone know about the offset pulleys? |

Have you mounted your pump and driving pulley yet? I'm truly mystified to know why you don't believe this is a straight bolt-in. |

Yes. It is a bolt in if you have the correct pump pulley for an ac power steering engine.I have everything mounted but the pump pulley doesn’t align with the ps pulley on the front of the damper. I tried to load pictures but apparently this web site is too smart for me. |

AC doesn't matter as it's driven off a different pulley. AC is an add-on to the back of the damper. Power steering is an add-on to the front of the damper and I can't see your damper in any of your photos. |

You are not telling me anything that I don’t already know. I have mounted the ac using the correct pulley attached to the back of the damper and I have attached the ps pulley to the front of the damper. Alt, wp and ac are installed and working properly. Don’t need help there. What I need is information on the correct PUMP pulley for an ac, ps engine. Do you have any information on that? |

There are different PS pump pulley and pump mounting brackets for the AC / PS 225 SL6 vehicles. The pulley is much "deeper" and the bracket that holds the pump, has a different mounting "off-set". I will see if I can get you a photo... DD |

Then yep, the P/S pulley and pump bracket is different with vs. without A/C. The "with A/C" pulley is dished so as to move the belt groove forward, toward the radiator. The "without A/C" pulley is flatter. The brackets place the pump appropriately in accord with the pulley.Quote: I modified the original Compressor bracket from a 1966 Plymouth Valiant slant 6 And mounted a Sanden compressor.
Cool! Can you show us pics?Quote: As I mentioned I aligned it with the rear most pulley.
That is correct no matter with or without P/S.
