Greetings: I have a 1972 p200 step van with a 4 speed manual trans. I would like to swap it out for an automatic trans. Reading many posts on this great website, I have determined that I need a 727 torqueflight, or a R727, or a 904. Any place that sells these rebuilds that I can just plug and play? I currently am rebuilding the engine so the trans and engine are out of the vehicle. Last, I want to be sure that whatever I buy will be the right one and installation will be as smooth as possible. Any help is appreciated, thanks! Karl |

Karl, Does your existing 4-speed have a slip-yoke or a fixed-yoke output? What kind of parking brake does your van use? What kind of shifter do you want? Column, dash or other? Does your radiator have a transmission cooler? Once we have answers for these questions we can better guide you to a transmission solution. Rebuilders do just that. They don't provide any of the ancillary pieces to make a transmission swap possible. The only way this would be completely plug-and-play is if you had another P200 with everything you need and transplanted it all. Cheers, |

Pictures would really help here. In some of the more commercial/industrial trucks and vans, Chrysler used 60s era parts (such as the A100 dash mounted automatic shifter) into the 70s. P series from the early 70s could have any one of a number of configurations as well as P series only parts. |

I may be out on an island here, but any time I have to "decide" between a 904 and a 727, I go with 727. thru most of the 70s, just about all trucks/vans had 727s in them, it wasn't til '80-ish when they started putting 904s ("998"/999"- still a "904" based trans, not a "727" based trans) in trucks and vans. Even with a /6. and I have smoked my share of 904s behind V8s, and a couple of /6 ones... whenever possible I'd junk the 904 and go 727. I may deviate from that on my 78 Fury which is 318/904, and rebuild the original 904.... still works, rubber seals within are getting tired from being 42 years old. I don't drive that car much though, and I certainly don't tow/haul with it. but that said, a 904 will be much easier in this day and age to find with a slant bellhousing..... which could certainly play into your choice. |

A 904, properly built and maintained, will live a long and happy life behind a slant six in a truck or passenger car application. Chrysler put slant sixes in trucks and vans in the 70s for the smae reason they put left-hand thread wheel studs on cars in the 60s. Unnecessary overengineering. |

"properly built".... I have yet to have a "built up" 904.... rebuilt "stock" is as good as it has gotten..... I did have the A500 out of my Dakota about 6 months ago and added a few "upgrades" to keep the problem I had with it from happening again (I hope) |

For what it is worth, my brother's 1983 Dodge van powered by a near stock 225 has gone through something like six 904s and two 727s. I finally taught myself how to rebuild a transmission and built him a stock 1973 904 but with 1968 V-8 904 innards. That transmission has held up fine for about ten years now. Face it, all of these cars and parts are getting old. I would assume that any transmission you install will need to be rebuilt, unless you know it has already been rebuilt. Even a stock 904 is plenty strong for almost all street driven applications. The 727 is just too much of a power hog with too much parasitic loss to be worth running. The added strength is just not worth the loss of power to the wheels. Unless you are building an airport tug or other serious tow rig, I strongly advise running a 904 (or A500) behind a slant six. |

I have a truck / Slant 727 for sale if you want it. Running condition Unknown. It is the long tailshaft.. so presumably less futzing to get it installled in your p200. Located in IRWIN PA Greg |

I have a 727 out of a 83 d200 pick up-crossmember, radiator (trans cooler ) trans cooler lines, downshift /TV rod and bracket . The starter has chewed a few teeth off the converter . It came out of a donor truck and most likely will need a reseal . I am in New Mexico - com and get it- it needs a good home. |
