I've read csheehy's recent thread on warrantied (or not) oil filters for non standpipe slants using filters with built in standpipes. Say that three times at fast speed I didn't want to go off the topic on the warranty issue.

My '82 slant truck has a standpipe on the filter mount. I'm not so sure an '82 hydraulic engine originally came that way, but there it is. Along the way I learned through some old posts about filters with and without built in standpipes. For the past 4 years, I've used up a close out supply of private label rebranded WIX 51515 ( I think). Taller filter without built in pipe. I'm down to about one real WIX 51515 but have a few odd filters that are shorter and seem to have the built in pipe in filter. Like Bosch D3402, Hastings-Baldwin LF196 and possibly a WIX 51068. All bought at one time due to Rock Auto application listings, for my truck and before I knew there are differences.

Is it possible to use the shorter filters mentioned, with the built in pipe, on a slant that has the mount standpipe? Assuming they would even fit on mount. And if they do fit over the standpipe, is that a bad idea, giving even more restriction?

My ‘83 slant powered D150 has a stand pipe so yes I believe they came that way from the factory.
I also use the tall WIX filters mentioned on your post.
So I have no experience with using a stand pipe filter on an pump that has a stand pipe mounted.
But my .02 is: I would measure the height of the stand pipe on the pump from the filter seal mounting surface and compare that to the internal depth available on the filter, again to the filter seal. If it appears there is some depth clearance available for oil flow,, I would want at least the diameter of the stand pipe on the pump for end clearance, see if the filter with the stand pipe will assemble to the pump.
If it does and you have an oil pressure gauge, monitor the gauge closely for changes. If you don’t have an oil pressure gauge I would install one at least temporarily.

The original oil pump from my 74 engine has one, my 85 D 150 doesn't. My 79 pick up and my parents 79 Lebaron with slant engines did not. I thought they did away with the stand pipe in the mid to late 70s. Around the time they started recommending the shorter (using a fram number for reference only) PH43 in place of the 8a. I remember seeing a warning either on the box or a slip of paper within the box, saying that the shorter filter would not fit engines with the stand pipe

Thanks for the good advice, DT. If things ever settle down to a dull roar around here, I'll do the measurements and maybe a test fitting on the short built in pipe filters. I think it's possible that I may have had one of those type on there at one time, but not sure. I'm thinking that they're likely something to avoid regardless with the mount standpipe.

Interesting, Don! Who knows what could have been swapped around on these vehicles or what the factory might have done based on application. FWIW, the engine in my '82 D150 is black which I thought meant that it was '84 and on Mexico manufacture? There's no VIN on the boss for that. Never took a look at the other codes. Maybe a warranty short block or long block swap?
