putting a 81 hyd. engine together, got a mystery cam off e-bay. new old stock. was told it was a stock cam. now i'm bolting down the rocker shaft and holly $#!+ that's allot of lift. valve springs go right closed. thought something may be wrong but all together right. does have clearance when not on lobe. i layed a straight edge accross the top of the the valve springs and it's down allot more than i recall. the last one i did had a .380 lift stock cam. i think. this is moving much more than that. so it's obviously not a factory stock cam. didn't think to write down the end markings, why if it was stock?? H.P. is not my forte.. should i pull it and start over?

Is this a hydraulic-lifter cam? If this is a solid-lifter cam, then the base circle may be way off. If it's a solid-lifter cam, you *might* be able to run it with hydraulic lifters (don't recall if cam material or lobe shape is different), BUT it sounds like you would need adjustable rockers and those would probably not oil the lifters properly? Can you verify it is a hydraulic cam somehow before tearing things apart? I believe you could swap to solid lifters and adjustable rocker train IF it is a solid-lifter cam.

oh sealed power isn't what they used to be. the problem was a new lifter came apart. never saw one do that. the tool must have popped the clip off when i put it in. the plunger came 1/2 way out and got stuck there somehow. so that pushrod didn't have clearance when lobe was down like all the rest. charlie? i pump them up before i install them, they bleed down on there own. and back up when ya start it. but unless the clip comes off like this one. up or down wouldn't cause that. but out of the hole did. how i fould it. measured the valve drop next to it and got .380 exact. so now i know it is a stock cam.
