Post subject:  Charlie Schmid ain't never gonna quit! :-)

Many of you know Charlie Schmid from Ocala, FL who has been drag racing Slant 6's since 1974.

It's hard for him to make it to races from way down in Florida with the closest race being in Knoxville, TN.

Every year for the last many years Charlie has lamented this fact and has said things like, "This will be my last year racing. It's just too hard on me..."

At the 2021 season finale race at London, KY Charlie asked me to verify his SSRN racing history. (Yes, Charlie was racing with us at the race! )

Charlie started racing with us in this series in 2001 where he was Rookie of the Year. He has raced at least once every single year since then, with the exception of 2020 when we only had 21 racers competing.

There are only 5 years in the last 20 where Charlie didn't win at least one round. And many of those years he only made it to one race. Charlie typically went to set a record; not necessarily to go rounds.

Speaking of records. There are plenty of those for Charlie as well.

He currently owns ALL of the D/Nitrous ET and MPH records, along with the C/Nitrous 1/8 mile ET and MPH records. He did own the C/N 1/4 mile records until Mike Jeffrey blew the class away with a 10.54 @ 125 MPH.

Here are Charlie's current and two former records:

D/N 1/4 ET: 13.1400 66 Barracuda (170) 3210# 5/20/2012 Hagerstown, MD
D/N 1/4 MPH: 100.0800 66 Barracuda (170) 3210# 5/20/2012 Hagerstown, MD
D/N 1/8 ET: 9.3910 66 Valiant (170) 2775# 9/6/2019 Clay City, KY
D/N 1/8 MPH: 74.1620 66 Valiant (170) 2775# 9/6/2019 Clay City, KY
C/N 1/8 ET: 7.9110 66 Valiant (225) 2755# 7/20/2017 Wilkesboro, NC
C/N 1/8 MPH: 84.2900 66 Valiant (225) 2760# 8/18/2016 Wilkesboro, NC

C/N 1/4 ET: 13.9880 66 Barracuda (170) 3250# 6/9/2002 Bristol, TN
C/N 1/4 MPH: 95.5400 66 Barracuda (170) 3250# 6/9/2002 Bristol, TN

Charlie really likes the Go Go Juice! He also likes using the weight break advantage of running the little 170 where you set the record in the next heavier class. His D/N records were set in either his 66 Barracuda or 66 Valiant running a 170 with probably a 200+ shot of nitrous. The Barracuda weighed in at 3210 for the 3200+ class. Sorry we don't have an E class for that one, Charlie!

Here's Charlie's SSRN History:

2002 - 9th of 49
2003 - 26th of 55
2004 - 32nd of 50

Very good times, with great people.
PS: One minor correction to Rob's post. I have been racing slant six's since 1974, not the '60's.

Yeah, you'd think, after all that time I would have realized racing a slant six is a waste of time. :o  .

Mike told me once that if he'd never met Seymour he could have saved a small fortune.

Racing in general is a sucker's bet, especially if you use your own money.

The important part is all the friends you meet along the way.
