Post subject:  Motortrend Hot Rod Blown Slant Six Dyno Test

I knew that Steve Dulcich had built a slant and was going to dyno run it, but I had never seen any results.
Well that short show was on today so I watched and stole a couple images.
Sorry if this old news, but it was news to me.

Steve built an, unknown size to me, 225 with flat top cast pistons, stock rods and stock cast crank.
Mild cam, Offy intake and clifford shorties were used from what I could see on TV.
The block was decked and the head shaved for 10 or 10.5 to one.
They used race fuel and around 30 degrees total on the first pulls, no blower.
Second pull was Torqstorm blower with a 750 Holley, 24 degrees total.
Third pull was a smaller pully on the blower.
Head gasket blew out on number 5 cylinder on last pull.
Not much love by Frieburger or the dyno operator.

Steve should try one of the MLS head gaskets on his engine. I know someone who had some made! :D :D

And 328 HP is a pretty nice number. As a comparison that engine in my Valiant would be a low 12 second car. Not too shabby any way you look at it.

Good that they are trying. If one does not do substantial port work on the head, that will severely limit power. Good bowl and seat transition work can get you 20-50 HP and that will show up in the boosted specs too, maybe more.

I have watch this segment a week or two before, and again last night. Dulcich's goal was to get a 225 slant to match the stock output of a 389 ci V8 the highest power engine available from the factory in an A body c 1967. He came real close. I don't recall if they listed the cam specks.

Dulcich likes a slant. All he had available was stock aftermarket composite head gasket. I suspect had he used a metal factory gasket there wouldn't have been a blow out. The other two guys thought for sure the slant burned a hole in a piston after smoke was exiting the valve cover vent and a compression test. But Dulcich maintained it was probably a blown head gasket. Once the valve cover was pulled one could see the failed gasket bellied out into the push rod cavity. It needed more clamping force, and a stronger head gasket.

That blower kit looks to be a quick easy way to bolt on big power to a slant, but it is expensive. As for the other two guys, they tend to only play with older V8's and not the Gen III Hemi on their Engine Master's Show. On another one of their shows when comparing NA to boosted output of the same engine, the power and torque curves mimic each other's shape. In other words the boosted plot is several units above the NA curve on the "Y" axis.

I suspect the slant will reappear on a later episode with improved gasket and head bolts.

Engine has ported head, he ported through 4 head iirc... Steve is on Instagram and have posted his slant there too.

They are not making tons of boost, although the CR is a bit high for a boosted motor. 215 HP NA at the crank is not much if the head was ported. 330 real HP is nothing to sneeze at, though.

I am inching toward installing my blower motor into a car (turbo motor is really worn out in 68 Dart, although it still runs fast) so maybe this summer I can get some testing done.

Lou, do you think it's possible to mount that blower on my car using the motor plate? I suspect I could redesign a plate if needed.

I don't see why not. You would need a thicker plate to have stability for the blower. IIRC, there are spacers there anyway, so I think it might just bolt onto the engine with the motor plate on it. I am in MA taking care of Christine's parents (nearing the end), but will be back to VA tomorrow and can look sometime this week. I even have a motor plate (Edd J version) that I could mock up. Give me a week or so for that.
