I have a circle track radiator in the Dart with not much clearance to the water pump - there's about 1 3/4" between the water pump pulley and the radiator core. Even with pancake electric fans, things are tight. (And there's an intercooler and transmission cooler on the other side of the radiator. I'm not 100% sure how I'll get the grille back on.) So, I'm wondering what the options are for a shorter water pump. I've found it is possible to press the pulley flange back on the shaft to gain some clearance that way, but is there a good off the shelf option for a pulley that fits? Alternatively, is there some oddball application, maybe something industrial or marine, that doesn't stick out as much? |

As far as longitudinal dimensions go, there is one (1) kind of Slant-6 water pump. It's going to be a mod-it-yourself job on the pump, and a go-fish deal on a pulley (until you either score or give up and have one custom-machined). That or an external water pump of one kind or another. |

Modifying the core support May be a better alternative Matt, along with moving the cores about. I am not sure what the up/down behind the grille support is on a '66 but I removed mine on the '64 for no good reason other then lightening as well as future plans to swap to a fiberglass hood - so No more need for the latch mechanism to be in place. Just remember, if you move the water pump pulley back, you will also have to move the crank pulley (maybe use the A/C pulley) back, along with the alt pulley. |

Thanks, that's what I thought. Too bad Summit doesn't let you search by pulley depth. The idea is to move the flange of the pulley back but find a flatter pulley so the belt alignment remains the same, instead of trying to move the crank pulley (which is a one grove Romac pulley/damper assembly) back on the crank. |

I had originally considered an electric water pump to shorten the overall length. Something like a Davies Craig system. Not a cheap or simple solution but it could get you almost 2 inches and give better temperature control. |

I would look at WP pulleys for a big block or small block. There are a couple of different depths, but I think the bolt pattern is the same as the slant. Possibly measure the depth you need, and do a "parts wanted" on forabodiesonly.com |

How about 2 small electric fans staggered around the water pump pulley instead of one between the radiator and pulley? |

Already got that, but may make larger of the two fans a bit smaller. If I had two of the smaller fans, I could probably get everything to clear without too much trouble.

2 X 10" fans should work well. Lou |

We did exactly what you're suggesting in the Turbo Dart. Charlie S has it right; the big block pulley has the same mounting bolt pattern, but it's a shallower pulley. I don't remember exactly how much shorter offhand, but probably about an inch? After we pressed the pump shaft flange down the correct amount, we shortened the protruding shaft with a cutoff wheel. I think we tried a stock big-block pulley at first, but it was a smaller diameter so it drove the pump faster. After that we swapped on an aftermarket under-drive pulley sold for a big block. It was somewhat larger than a stock slant 6 pulley, but we figured a little under-drive would be appropriate for a race engine. I think there's only about a 1/8" gap between our WP pulley and the harmonic balancer now. After that it's just a matter of finding the right length belt. |

Thanks! I had thought the big block pulleys had the same amount of dishing - I'll look into that. |

I'm pretty sure it came from a big block, but I could be wrong. Bob handled most of the cooling stack mods. I did find a picture with the shiny aftermarket pulley installed. I'll see if I can find a record of the part number. ![]() |

Looks like I ordered this after all. Here's what we ended up using: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCH-10072 |
