| Post subject: | Removing pinion bearing? |
I have a 742 case pinion with an old bearing on it. I'd like to remove it and ream the ID of it out to use as a "set up" bearing to get the shims close without pressing on the new bearing. I'm not even sure there is room to get a bearing splitter between the teeth on the gear and the bearing cage. Is there an easy way to get the bearing off? Thanks! |

You probably need to buy a spare new bearing to make a setup bearing. There might be a collar you can fit in there but prolly not. Cut the cage open remove the rollers and cut the inner race.... split the race with a chisel then it's off. Greg |

Ive taken a welder and once the rollers and cage are out of the way, just weld beads around the outside of inner race, as a source of heat.... and it will usually just fall off. I'm talking right around where the old cage and bearings rode, NOT on the pinion shaft! Ive also taken a cutoff wheel and started cutting a groove in that inner race, then put a chisel in the cut groove (DON'T grind too deep!) and smack it with a hammer. sometimes I grind 2 slots approx across from each other. BE CAREFUL here, make sure you have eye/face protection as Ive seen them shatter when they break, because they are so hard/brittle. But no, you AREN'T getting taht old bearing off without ruination. NOT happenin. are you swapping gears or just bearings? If just doing bearings with same ring and pinion, I have never gone wrong just putting the shims back in the same as what they were installed originally. Now if youre swapping gears, all bets are off on that one. Or putting your gears on a different carrier (like when swapping to Sure Grip maybe?) You have to go thru "setup" in those cases. . |

I have a new ring and pinion and all new bearings. I just have an old pinion (damaged) that I thought I may try and use for set up purposes. I do know how to destroy one and get it off.  I figured there has to be a way to get them off to do proper set up since they do that with the new ones when the pinion depth is off?

Go to a shop with a press and a bunch of collets? Maybe Speedy has those? Lou |

I like the the idea that Don mentioned as well. Weld some beads to the inner race and then you can get the puller jaws to hold it, or welding the bearing to the collar. I doubt you are going to save the bearing, you might...... but by the time you go through all the fuel and hassle of finding the right adapter or tool, from other local folks, You could have bought a brandy new fresh bearing to make into a setup bearing. That's what I did last time... I hear they are cheaper than some seals now..   Greg |

I just sand out the new bearings so they slip on and off. The pinion will never know the bearing slid on after you tighten the nut. I use my die grinder and some sanding rolls. It doesn't take much. |

Took the old pinion and a Mapp gas torch and heated the inner race as best i could for about 1 minute. Turned over the pinion and the bearing fell off. Use a sanding drum and my wheel cylinder hone and took about .003 out of the inside. Bearing drops on and off the new pinion like a champ.
