Can anyone confirm the distance from the crankshaft center-line to the most outer left (driver) side of the engine, including any manifolds or other needed equipment? We are looking to use a slant six in a 1940's Desoto and want to see of it will clear the steering box. I have a measurement from this forum of width equal to about 17.5 inches from the outside valve cover to the production exhaust manifolds. But I am not sure if the engine is symmetrical in is slant. I need the center line to the lest edge to see if it will clear. Thanks you, James |

From the cylinder head from where the manifolds attach, to the end of the intake manifold is 12". From the dipstick hole to the end of the intake manifold is 3". I hope this helps. I have seen slants installed into '47 - '52 1/2 ton trucks with out any problems. So it should fit into the same spot on the Desoto. |

Sounds like an excellent project. Please keep us posted. It was the length of the engine that kept me from installing a slant six in my 51 Plymouth. Best of luck! |

Having shoehorned a slant into my 72 Dodge Colt I would say you should be ok. You can offset the engine if you need more clearance on the drivers side. If you check out some YouTube videos showing slants with Dutra Duals, you will have an idea of how close you can route the exhaust. Good luck with your project! |
