How do you determine if your oil pump is good? Rebuilding my 1962 Slant 6 and ordered a replacement pump (which is incorrect) so it got me to thinking, do I use the existing pump? I have cleaned it up and serviced the relief valve. It turns freely, it has a small amount of aft-fore play but seems tight. Before I look for another pump, wondering if it makes sense to stay with the original. Any ideas on where to locate a dip stick tube? It is getting harder to find parts! gpk1961 |

I would vote for using the original pump. In the past people have had problems with replacement pumps failing due to the oil pump gear ether being too soft, or something like that. It was/is a common enough problem that I would swap my old gear onto a new pump when and if the original pump was worn enough to need replacement. Others may have more insight, and better advice. |

The FSM has a method that uses feeler gauges to check the pump for wear. |

If the old pump feels good and it not too gunked up, I would use that. You stand a MUCH smaller chance of wiping out the oilpump gear too. I almost always reuse my old pumps and they work fine. I open up the relief valve and clean that and add about 0.060" of washers inside the cap (same OD as the spring) to raise the (higher RPM) ultimate pressure . Lou |
