Post subject:  Engine misfire

I have had a problem with spark plugs firing, or not in my 77 D100 for some time. When I pull one it is usually black and dry. Along the way I have gone through two carburetors, the original and one from a 76 Volarie. Both were Super 6 Carters and I cleaned them with a fine wire and tested them with carb cleaner to be sure no passages were plugged. The float level has been checked a couple of times because I thought it was flooding, and it might be. It dies after running a rough for a few minutes. I have had this problem with two different distributors. One, the electrinic dizzy with a GM HEI ignition, and the other a breaker point dizzy. The shafts on both of them are tight both sideways and vertically. I have tried two different coils as well. When I first saw the problem I was using the electronic ignition. The timing light would not fire on 1-2-3, but would fire on 4-5-6. After messing with it with no luck I installed a breaker-point distributor. After replacing the points and setting them to .020" it seemed to be better at first. Now It is not firing on #1 and sometimes others as well. I have installed two sets of new plugs as well as new wires and rotor. The cap appears new, as did everything else, and there are no carbon dust, tracks, or cracks in the cap. The head was rebuilt within a hundred miles or less to the tune of over $700. The last thing I have done is replace the timing gears and chain. I have advanced the distributor two teeth and it no longer backfires flames out the carb. It also starts easier, but the timing mark is advanced and never quite reaches the 0 degree mark. I am about to switch back to the electronic distributor and HEI ignition to see what that does. Since I changed the oil to Dello 15W-40 there is no smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Most of the time when I am working on the engine the tailpipe has been cut off at the header and the flapper seems to be working, so there is no back pressure to cause the engine to slow and die. Compression measures 120 through all six cylinders. Is there something I am missing?

Before I changed the timing gear set I did put a camera into cylinder #1 and TDC matched the timing marks on the damper. I have not done that since and now that I have the truck in the garage again I will take a look to see if there is a change after the timing gears and chain have been replaced.
