Post subject:  More oil pump gear failure info

I know there's been lots of write ups on oil pump gear failures over the years. I just wanted to share something I came across recently while watching the Slant Daily Garage youtube channel. In one of Shane's videos, he showed where he had his oil pump gear fail on one of his slant sixes. He checked and found that the rollmaster timing chain gear was pulling his cam too far forward which caused insufficient gear mesh. I did a search on this site and didn't find any posts or any of the tech articles that mentioned this. I could have missed it so if this has already been covered by someone else please excuse the post. I have one of the rollmaster sets so if I ever get around to building another engine I'll have to check for that.

That is good info on the video. I believe I had to cut my lower gear back .060? Bottom line is you have to check everything! :D

I wonder if you can just also shim the front of the cam into the gear so that it does not "pull" into the gear's register as far... Could also solve the same problem without machining.

It seems that 16 Gauge Sheet steel would be approximately 0.060" thickness. it could be used as the shim as a quick alternative to gear machining.

McMaster Carr has shims that would work also in almost any size and thickness you want. But Lou offered to machine my gear and I went that route.

Got it, thanks!

This is certainly an interesting take. I wonder if that explains the randomness of occurences?

Certainly an interesting idea about fore/aft timing gear and cam depth alignments. Pays to check all this stuff.
