Post subject:  Air Cleaner - Hood Clearance solutions?

I'm trying to solve a hood clearance issue where my front air cleaner hits. I have 9" air cleaners now that don't match since I needed more drop on the front one. I dont know where I got that 9" half open base, but it just low enough to clear.

SlantSixDan mentioned the 11" aircleaners from 61-69 (without the breather attachment) have more drop, so I could possibly use that as a base and cut it down to fit the 9" top. I think this is only an issue on the 60-62 cars, but figured there are multiple ways to skin this cat.

I'm also trying to add a choke, so didn't want massive drop that might hit the pull off. I'd appreciate any thoughts or different ideas. Thanks!

Find the same diameter air filter in 1" to 1/2" shorter height.

You might hafta study some catalogs.

Another option is to gather some 1 bbl bases and carefully cut and reweld them back together with mote filter drop built in.

You're right Charlie, if I'd only kept that motor it would be no problem ;)

Yep I tried cross referencing Wix's catalog and it looks like the stock dimensions of the Wix 42011puts it at 3" high. They do have a very similar ID/OD one at Wix 46094 which is 2" high. And guess what I have in there right now? the 46094. So apparently I did this originally, and the 2" version is still not quite low enough. I'll keep searching.

Thanks!

I had no clearance with my 170 hyper pak in my 62 Lancer wagon, so I know your frustration.
I found some filters at napa that were a little shorter, so that might be a solution.

A BFH would work. You even have a line to follow.

Hehe, yes the thought crossed my mind. I was seeing if someone smarter than my caveman self had other approaches. I have tried so hard to teach my son to think before he hammers, so figured I should do the same. But that is my fall back.

Here is what I did on my '69 Dart with a 225 Hyperpack..Similar issue to yours except for the choke linkages.

That post is over 10 years old.. good stuff.

Yes, my '62 Lancer moved to Australia.

68 Superstock Darts and Barracudas used 3/8 K member spacers to mount the engine lower.
If you don't want to caveman it, this might be the answer.

Thanks Greg, I like the "nobody will ever see it" approach. What did you do to that air cleaner base? Looks like a pie plate so wasn't sure beyond the duct tape that you did ;)
