| Post subject: | How to tell engine size on Dart and Valiant |
Hey everyone, my dad passed away last year and on his property we found a 1963 Dodge Dart and a 1965 Plymouth Valiant (among other things, like 30 other vehicles, 3 sailboats, 2 RVs, a moving truck...) and I am looking to find out more about them. When I look at a VIN decoder it can't tell me which engine size I have in each, and I can't see anywhere that it says what it is on the car. Are there any obvious things that would give it away? I am headed out there again tomorrow and can take pictures if that would be helpful? |

If you are speaking of just slant 6's... then look at the bypass hose between the water pump and head. The 170 hose is about 2" long and the 225 or 198 will have a 3" version of this same hose. Good luck. |

The hose ID is very definitive for telling the difference between the 170cid "low deck" engine, and the 198/225 "high deck" engines. However it will not tell you the year of the engine. This can become a issue when swapping engines and/or transmissions. It can also affect what internal parts were used.If the engine has never had the top of the block resurfaced, the ID numbers are on the top of the block behind the alternator bracket just below the #1 spark plug. |

There is a casting number on the block, but that cannot be used to identify the year.

On the driver side of the block there is a 7 digit number cast into the block that will determine a general age range and again whether it's a 170 or whether it's a 198-225. Each casting number was used for a range of years, but not the whole range of time that the /6 was produced. Also some engines had 3 freeze plugs while others had 5.. I don't remember which ones had what.... Other than after a certain point they all had 5. Doc (Doug Dutra) published a book that describes all of this in pretty good detail. It's all about the /6 engine On the 198 version that's the least likely as it was built for the shortest timeframe. |

so for me the #s are 2806830-4 and the other engine is2463430-11 does that tell what size they are ? |

You can look up those casting numbers Here! That document will not have the - 11 etc at the end of your casting # as it is irrelevant to your situation. Greg |

Yeah somewhere there's a chart for that. I know it's in Docs book, but it may also be here on the site in the "articles" page Did you ever look at the block where the head meets it, behind the alternator? If the top face of the block has never been machined down since the engine was first built, there will be numbers stamped on the block ledge in that area. It may be rusty or caked with dirt, sludge, etc and have to be cleaned off. The engine size was stamped there at the factory. Along with some other numbers, letters and sometimes symbols. These numbers will face "up". I know there's been talk about this subject many times over there years on this forum. |
