Post subject:  HEI Mod / best ignition for 318?

I bought a 318 for my 1984 Dodge Truck Project. I did the HEI mod on my previous slant six project with success thanks to all of the write ups.

Will the slant six HEI Mod work the same on the 318?

If I go that route, which distributor would be best? (I did a NOS Electronic Dist on my slant six - there are more options for the 318)

Is the HEI mod better than a good quality HEI distributor that is available for the 318?

I also considered going with a good quality points distributor for simplicity - am I crazy to consider that?

Thanks for your input.

BTW, if anyone near NC needs a slant six, I have two available. (1) is a 1984 in stock condition, runs but needs a rebuild. (2) is a 1986 that has been previously rebuilt with .040 pistons.
I would sell these cheap and would like to see someone use them. I would keep them around, but I am short on storage space.

Yes, just the same. You can use the bracket that mounts the module to the underside of the distributor because there's no splash hazard as on the Slant-6.

Standard Chrysler single-pickup electronic distributor, preferably with advance curves tailored to your application.

Yes, it's more cost-effective. There is no practical benefit to the expensive aftermarket distributors, and the cheap ones are junk.

Poorer performance and fuel economy, dirtier exhaust and engine oil, more underhood fiddlefutzing required, difficulty buying points in quality worth having, greater likelihood of failure…

Dan has got it on the ignition stuff.

Don is right, I am interested in those engines, although others may also be interested and that is fine. I am about a 5.5 hr drive away, so it may take a little while. Let's talk offline. I will be visiting Durham area in late October...

Good luck with your projects!
Lou
