Hey- I have a 1979 Dodge B100 slant 6 - Seemed to run okay last summer, fall came and it wouldn't start so we converted it to HEI to eliminate a bunch of junk. Now it runs fine at idle, revs fine, but Its dogging out under load, if I'm real gentle with it, she'll get up to 60mph, but then backfires a bunch. if I try to accelerate normally it'll just spit sputter and have no power. Also noticed some of the plugs are fouling out. These are the things I have done so far... Timing is good, changed plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, changed carb, did compression check, can't find any vacuum leaks, changed coil... After putting in the HEI module, should I also have converted my distributor, or do I need to run hotter plugs? Gosh IDK... feel like there is just something simple we may be missing and getting so frustrated-- Please help -not sure what else to try. thanks! |

Did you already have a Electronic ignition Distributor with Vacuum advance and a single pick up in it? Then you are Ok as far as a distributor goes. The advance curve may need worked on however. |

Check or replace fuel filter, in tank sock filter, fuel pump. It could be starving for fuel or crap somehow got into the carb. I would say you have bad or failed fuel or ign system component but you may have to just try things until you get it sorted. I am sure other sages will chime in with helpful advice too Good luck, Greg |

Yes, I already had an electronic dist with vac advance and single pickup... wondering if I may as well replace that too?... I'm not familiar with working the advance curve, but I'll do some checking with that- thanks Rick Greg- I was thinking potential fuel issue too, but it seems that there is plenty of fuel getting in. Is it possible that if a pump is gunked up, it could be letting in too much fuel? Thanks for the ideas. PS- I'm kind of new to all this so am trying to figure it out as I go ![]() ![]() |
