Terrible klunk going into reverse, forward is ok. U-joint? Broken mount? Any thoughts?

I had a '74 W100 I bought new and it did this. Not knowing anything at the time, the dealer said it was normal :? . I did put 70,000 hard miles on it and didn't have a problem but I never got used to the clunk. If I had the truck today, I'd pull the tans pan and check for a misadjusted reverse band or sticky servo.

...not sure abot trucks, but there was a TSB on my '85 Fifth Ave and others around that year with the 904 based trans. There was a kit available for dealers to install in the valve body to make the N to R clunk less harsh. We'd have to do a little more research on that angle.
